Smoky Mountain’s men’s and women’s swim teams will open their seasons Friday in a 5 p.m. meet hosted by North Buncombe at the Buncombe County Schools Aquatics Center on the Roberson High School campus.

“Practice has been going good,” said Logan Gentry, who is preparing for his fourth season as coach. “We have a lot of returnees. When I first started coaching, the team was pretty young. Now I’m starting to see a more veteran team.”

Key returnees he listed from a season that was restricted by COVID-19 include junior Brianna Bryson for the women and senior Parker Smith and sophomore Stone Doppke for the men.

“I’ve been pretty impressed with practice,” Gentry said. “I think everyone is anxious for the meet Friday.”

There are only six swimmers out for the two teams combined. Senior Josh Stack and junior Reed Gamble join Doppke and Smith for the men. Other than Bryson, the only member of the women’s team is sophomore Lily Snover.

Kendra Graham, who like Gentry is a former SM swimmer, is assistant coach.

The schedule is as follows:

Nov. 19 – North Buncombe at Asheville.

Dec. 18 – at Franklin.

Jan. 15 – Franklin and Murphy at Franklin; 22 – Mountain Seven Conference Meet at Waynesville.
