Smoky Mountain’s Anna Morgan qualified for the State Indoor Track Meet as an individual and as part of a relay team during a meet Jan. 28 at Murphy.

The state meet is set for Saturday, Feb. 15, in Winston-Salem.

“Most of the kids who were there had their season-best performances,” Coach Libby McRae said.

She noted that the 3,200-meter relay team dropped almost 10 seconds off its previous best time, while qualifying for the state meet. The unit of Morgan, Becky Pechmann, Lindsey Stack and Maia Wilde was second in 11:27.

Morgan qualified for state in the 500 dash and won the event in 1:26.4.

For the men, Daniel Melton was second in the 300 dash (39.0) and third in the 55 dash (7.3).

McRae said he is close to reaching the state qualifying time in the 300.

Placing third for the Lady Mustangs were Addison Cowan in the 55 dash (9.1), Lydia Norman in the long jump (12-1) and Isabelle Warnecke in the shot put (22-10).

Wilde was fifth in the 1,600 run (7:08.3).

Samantha Long (20-9) was fifth and Cowan (17-2.5) was sixth in the shot put.

The 800 relay team of Pechmann, Cowan, Morgan and Stack was third in 2:11.1.

Manuel Herevia won the men’s shot put with a throw of 37-7. Aaron Guadarrama was sixth at 33-5.

Caleb Phillips was third in the men’s 1,600 run with a season-best time of 5:33.8.

The Mustang men were fourth among six teams, and the women were fourth out of five teams.

Murphy won the men’s meet with 140 points, followed by Cherokee (101), Swain (73), SM (33), Robbinsville (9) and Hayesville (6).

Swain took the women’s meet with 122 points, followed by Murphy (106), Robbinsville (54), SM (33) and Tri-County Early College (38).
