Smoky Mountain’s men’s and women’s cross country teams competed Sept. 18 in the White Squirrel Run at Brevard.
The men were 10th among 15 teams, and the women were ninth out of 16 teams.
“The competition was really good,” Coach Pam Shuler said. “It was mostly 3-A and 4-A schools with a lot of private schools.”
Tyler Watterson led the Mustangs as he was third out of 172 runners in 17:25. Completing SM’s top five were:
Henry Hanks, 43rd, 19:52; Caleb Phillips, 59th, 20:23 (personal best); Sam Conlin, 73rd, 20:45; and Clay Pate, 102nd, 21:54.
North Henderson won the meet.
Lily Buenting topped the Lady Mustangs as she was 14th among 148 runners with a personal-best time of 22:13. Rounding out SM’s top five were:
Anna Morgan, 30th, 22:58; Becky Pechmann, 44th, 23:47 (personal best); Lucy McRae, 63rd, 24:24; and Emma Jutte, 87th, 26:07.
“I feel like we were right on target,” Shuler said. “We are improving each week They are meeting the challenge to be competitive with other schools.”
