Smoky Mountain’s men’s and women’s indoor track teams will open their seasons Wednesday, Dec. 1, at 4 p.m. at West Henderson.

This will be the first indoor track action in two years. The 2020-21 season was canceled by the N.C. High School Athletic Association due to COVID-19.

“Practice has been going really well,” Coach Todd Davidson said. “I am definitely seeing a lot more people on both sides than in past years with indoor track. That should really help with opportunities.”

He said his teams received a lift when members of the cross country squads came out.

“They are in really good shape,” Davidson said. “That’s good to see. There is a lot of potential there.”

Among those out are all-conference cross country runners Caleb Phillips for the men and Lily Buenting for the women.

“Everybody is putting in a lot of effort,” Davidson said. “Some of the people who have had success in the past are looking pretty strong. We have some good sprinters and good hurdlers. We have the distance runners, and we have a lot of jumpers.”

Josh Handy and Caroline Spilliards are competing after qualifying for the state track meet in the spring.

Davidson also expects Da’Mare Williams to do well for the men.

“Overall they are coming back pretty fast,” Davidson said. “I see a lot of improvement since outdoor track.”

The men’s roster is as follows:

Aiden Menickelli, Ben Saunooke, Caden Graning, Caleb Borchelt, Caleb Phillips, Clay Buchanan, Coleman Hopfinger, Da’mare Williams, Drew Callaghan, Drew Poston, Henry Hanks, Josh Handy, Mathias Saunooke, Nathan Porter, Richard Ly, Zeb Mathis, Isaiah Gonzalez and Cason Sheppard.
