Franklin pulled away from a 10-0 halftime lead to defeat Smoky Mountain 30-7 in the JV football season-opener last Thursday at Franklin.

The Mustangs scored with around four minutes left in the game on a 30-yard pass from Brett Richmond to Max Buchanan. Zeke Sink kicked the PAT.

“There were a lot of good things that happened and a lot of bad things that happened,” Coach Zeb Capps said. “It was a good test for us early in the season. Franklin is well coached and played fundamentally sound.”

He said SM gave up a safety early in the game and had a long touchdown pass nullified by a penalty. The Mustangs also committed four turnovers.

“It’s the little details that have to be fixed,” Capps said. “For several of the players it was their first high school game.”

SM was scheduled to open the season at Madison. After the Patriots disbanded their JV program, the game with Franklin was added.

A Sept. 19 game with Madison has been replaced with a Sept. 26 home contest against Mitchell.
