COVID-19 issues caused some local athletic events to be postponed.

Smoky Mountain’s wrestling team was to have taken part in the Osley Saunooke Tournament at Cherokee on New Year’s Day, but it was called off due to COVID numbers in the Cherokee community.

Western Carolina’s men’s basketball games against UNC-Greensboro and East Tennessee were postponed due to positive COVID tests and quarantine requirements within the Catamount program.

No make-up dates have been announced for the Dec. 29 home game with UNC-G and the New Year’s Day game at ETSU.

Tickets for the UNC-G game will be honored at the rescheduled date.

Western was scheduled to return to action at 7 p.m. Wednesday against Citadel in the Ramsey Center. Results were not known at press time.

The WCU women had a non-conference game with Southern Wesleyan called off due to COVID on New Year’s Eve. There is no information about a make-up date.

The Lady Cats were able to play their game Sunday with Montreat.

The Southern Conference has announced that it is modifying its COVID-19 rescheduling policies for men’s and women’s basketball. The league’s 10 athletic directors voted unanimously to replace the previously announced policy, which called for a forfeit if a team could not play due to COVID-related issues, with one that results in a no contest instead. The conference office will attempt to reschedule affected games at the earliest date possible.
