Western Carolina’s men’s basketball team was honored recently as the National Association of Basketball Coaches announced the seventh annual Team Academic Excellence Awards, created by the NABC Committee on Academics to recognize teams with at least a 3.0 GPA.

The Catamounts posted a team GPA of 3.285.

“I can’t say enough about the efforts of our student-athletes in the classroom,” Coach Mark Prosser said. “We are very proud of them. This is the first time in our program’s history that we have earned this award. We feel very fortunate to represent one of the finest and most up-and-coming universities in the Southeast. Our Academic Support staff is second to none in the country, and they deserve a lot of credit for working diligently with our young men. This award is theirs also.”

The NABC’s Team Academic Excellence Award is given to any NCAA, NAIA or NJCAA men’s basketball team with a team GPA greater than 3.0, counting all student-athletes who competed during the 2018-19 season. This is the first time WCU earned the team award since the NABC began the team award program in 2012-13.

A total of eight Catamounts finished the 2018-19 school year with a 3.0 or higher GPA.
