Cole Hooper, Bret Baldwin and Zebby Matthews

There was a reunion of sorts for Smoky Mountain baseball last week when Appalachian State played at Western Carolina. Former Mustangs Cole Hooper (left) and Bret Baldwin (right) of Appalachian State are joined by WCU’s Zebby Matthews (center). Hooper pitched the first two innings of ASU’s 2-0 win.

Six Appalachian State pitchers combined on a six-hitter in a 2-0 non-conference baseball victory over Western Carolina on March 4 at Childress Field/Hennon Stadium.

One of those pitchers was former Smoky Mountain standout Cole Hooper. He went the first two innings for the Mountaineers. He gave up three hits and no walks and struck out three.

Noah Hall, who pitched the next two frames for ASU, was credited with the win.

Jack Hartman pitched a scoreless ninth for the save.

Bailey Welch and Luke Allison both had two hits for the Mounties.

ASU scored on RBI singles by Phillip Cole in the fourth and Luke Drumheller in the seventh.

Starting pitcher Corey Bright (0-1) went the first six innings and took the loss.
