Smoky Mountain Competition Cheer ended the regular season with wins April 9 in the Gatlinburg (Tenn.) Diamond Championship hosted by Diamond Cheer and Dance at the Gatlinburg Convention Center  The Sparkling Gems (ages 6 and under) and Junior Onyx (ages 12 and under) both won first place for Level 1 performance recreation for their divisions, had zero deductions for their routine, and received at-large bids to The One, an end-of-season competition held across the United States at limited locations. The Dazzling Diamonds (ages 10 and under) won second place for Level 1 performance recreation and had zero deductions for their routine. The Senior Sapphires won first place for Level 3 performance recreation and had zero deductions. In addition, the senior team won grand champions of the entire recreation division, received a Grand Champion bid to The Finale Cheer and Dance Championship, and was presented with a fully paid bid to The One. The Purple Amethysts, Cheer Abilities, also received a Grand Champion bid to The Finale Cheer and Dance Championship. The entire program was presented with the Sportsmanship Award.

The teams will be traveling to Jekyll Island, Georgia this weekend to compete against teams from across the U.S. at The Finale Cheer and Dance Championship. Various cheerleaders are also competing in the solo/duo/trio and stunt group divisions.

For more information on joining, call 226-9943 or 506-1419. The teams currently have cheerleaders from Jackson, Haywood, Macon and Swain counties, as well as Rabun County, Georgia. Cheerleaders can be 3-18 years of age, male or female. No experience is required. An information session is planned from 2-4 p.m. May 15 at the Jackson County Rescue Squad building. Tryouts are scheduled for May 21.
