The 27th annual Tour de Cashiers Mountain Cycling Experience and 5K Run, will be held Saturday.
Highlands-Cashiers Hospital is the Premier Sponsor for the event.
Riders and runners will participate in events featuring the local scenery and recreation. A 3.1-mile 5K run begins at the Cashiers-Glenville Recreation Center, and follows Frank Allen, Valley and Cashiers School roads and Mitten Lane to a turnaround at Summit Charter School then returns to the rec center.
Under the direction of Tony Hammett, producer of Peak Racing Events in Atlanta, Georgia, the event is expected to attract participants from across the southeast, many who return every year.
“We are excited to again produce the Tour de Cashiers Mountain Cycling Experience and second annual 5K,” Hammett said. “We have a heightened focus on the Cashiers 5K and the growing popularity of running events on the Plateau, and the Tour is pleased to host one of the local signature races. The 5K in association with the cycling ride offers the opportunity for riders’ families and friends to participate in the day’s activities.”
Tour de Cashiers cyclists will depart from the Cashiers-Glenville Recreation Center and follow one of three traditional routes – 25, 62 and 100 miles – across Jackson, Macon and Transylvania counties. They will ride steep climbs and fast descents at 3,500 feet plus above sea level with more than 10,500 feet of elevation changes and cross through the communities of Cashiers, Lake Toxaway, Sapphire, Glenville and Highlands.
Tour sponsorships support local community and economic development efforts by the Cashiers Area Chamber of Commerce. Director Stephanie Edwards extended the Chamber’s appreciation to the event’s many community sponsors.
