After opening the season with a Southern Conference loss to Mercer, Western Carolina’s football team will take a step up in competition Saturday with a game at N.C. State of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Kickoff time is 12:30 p.m. at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh. The game will be televised by Fox Sports Carolinas.

Dave Doeren is in his seventh season as coach of the Wolfpack. He has a 44-34 record after Saturday’s 34-6 victory over East Carolina.

Western has never beaten State in six tries.

Matthew McKay completed 25 of 37 passes for 308 yards against East Carolina. His top receiver was Thomas Thayer, who had six receptions for 83 yards.

Zonovan Knight led the Pack on the ground with nine carries for 42 yards.

The Catamounts opened the season Saturday with a 49-27 loss to Mercer. Quarterback Tyrie Adams became the school’s career leader in total offense and passing yards, but there were few other bright spots for WCU.

The defense, which allowed 38.6 points per game last year had another tough performance against the Bears.
