1961 Senior League World Series

Members of the Sylva team that placed second in the 1961 Senior League World Series were honored at a recent Little League game. Players from 1961 who were on hand were, from left: Johnny Maney, Mike Deitz and Henry Bryson.

Jackson County Little League Baseball honored members of the 1961 Senior League team that played in the Senior League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania during a special Platinum Game on May 3 at Mark Watson Park.

The 1961 Sylva team reached the finals of the Senior League World Series before losing to Natorna Heights, Pennsylvania. Team members present for the May 3 game were Mike Deitz, Henry Bryson and Johnny Maney. Family members represented the late Ben Henson.

A proclamation about the 1961 team listed participants as: Tom Clayton, president; Clyde Rector, officer in charge; Archie Crawford, player agent; Shelton Bradsher, coach; Jim Cunningham, coach; and players Henry Bryson, Jimmy Crawford, Mike Deitz, Harold Hall, Ben Henson, Charles Henson, Mike Lewis, Johnny Maney, Peter Maxwell, Kenneth Nicholson, Jerry Phillips, Steve Thomas, Coleman Walker and Terry Joe Woodard.

“We are pleased to have had this chance to honor the 1961 team for their accomplishments,” Jackson County Little League President Curtis Lambert said. “The league appreciates everyone who made this event possible. Thank you to the Platinum Game and season Jackson County Little League sponsors for making it possible for young people in our county to learn about hard work, dedication and sportsmanship through baseball and softball.”

In the game between 12U teams played earlier this month at Mark Watson Park, Stanberry Insurance defeated B.H. Graning Landscapes 11-1.

Playing for Graning Landscapes were Abraham Graning, Sawyer Sumner, Whalen Uhalde, Connor Sumner, Talan Crowe, Calvin Huffman, Chaske Raines, Carl Baird and Braxton Crowe. Head coach was Reid Smithdeal.

Playing for Stanberry were Josh Vinyard, Caiden Vick, Andy Moore, Cason Sheppard, Mason Forbis, Zeb Mathis, Trace Phillips, Tyee Jones, Devlin Bright, Gabe Dial and Joe Messich. Head coach was Larry Phillips.
