Playoffs set to start in baseball, soccer

Smoky Mountain's baseball and soccer teams are scheduled to open the state 3-A playoffs Tuesday.

The sites, times and opponents aren't yet known.

The baseball team (19-3) finished tied with Franklin for first place in the Western Athletic Conference at 11-1. The Mustangs will play host to Franklin at 5 p.m. today (Thursday) in a game to determine who will be seeded first and second from the WAC.

The winner will be home Tuesday against the second seed from the Western Foothills Conference - South Caldwell, East Lincoln or Mooresville.

The SM-Franklin loser will travel to North Surry, the top seed from the Mountain Valley Conference.

The Lady Mustang soccer team (18-1, 10-1) was scheduled to conclude its regular season at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Tuscola, the team that handed SM its lone loss.

If Tuscola wins, the Lady Mountaineers would wrap up the WAC title and SM would go into the playoffs as the conference's second seed.

A Lady Mustang victory would leave the teams tied for first place and force a draw to determine the number one and two seeds. Tuscola has the maximum three games this week meaning the teams could not play to break a tie.

Seedings are being used in women's soccer for the first time this year so there is no way to know who the Lady Mustangs would play in the first round. If they are the WAC's top seed, they will play at home. They may play at home even if they are the second seed.

The second round of the baseball playoffs is set for Friday, May 12. The soccer playoffs will have the second round on Thursday, May 11.

A $3 admission will be charged for all playoff games at SM including the conference baseball playoff contest with Franklin.
