9-10-year-olds reach finals of district LL tournament

Jackson County's 9-10-year-old Little League All-Stars advanced to the championship game of the District 5 tournament with a 3-1 victory over East Asheville Tuesday at Bryson City. The same teams were scheduled to play at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Swain County Recreation Park for the district title. Reslts were not known at Herald press time. The winner will advance to the state tournament starting July 24 at Greenville.

Nick Miles pitched six strong innings for the win. He allowed only three hits and struck out six.

Martin Davis had Jackson County's lone RBI. The other two runs scored on errors.

Manager Mike Vanzura said the entire team turned in a strong defensive effort.

After going through the area tournament undefeated, Jackson County was blasted by East Asheville 10-0 in district play Saturday. Logan Vanzura's single was the lone hit. Miles pitched three solid innings and left trailing 1-0.

Jackson County stayed alive in the double-elimination event Monday with a 10-3 victory over South Asheville. Gabe Skwara and Michael Bradley both pitched three innings.

The manager said outstanding defense was the key to the win. He said C.J. Fortner made a nice catch in the outfield while Bradley handled a hard grounder to the mound. Nathan Bumgarner was cited for his catching.
