Lady Warriors blank SM behind Corn's one-hitterBy Carey Phillips |
Smoky Mountain's Kristin Wilson makes a catch in left field to end the second inning in Friday's softball game at Erwin. The Lady Mustangs turned in some good defensive plays but lost 1-0. |
Amanda Corn pitched a one-hitter as Erwin edged Smoky Mountain 1-0 in the Western Athletic Conference softball opener Friday at Erwin.
The Lady Warriors scored the game's only run in the bottom of the first. Kori Buckner had a bunt single, advanced to third on an error on the play and came home on a wild pitch. Shannon Ensley singled in the fourth for SM's lone hit. She reached third on two wild pitches but was stranded. Heather Adams pitched a strong game for the Lady Mustangs (1-3). She yielded five hits, walked no one and struck out six. Erwin's run was unearned. Corn also struck out six while walking three. Her team played errorless defense. "It was a good game by both teams," Coach Melissa Hill said. "We had one letdown on the bunt. The girls played well and didn't let them score again. We've got to be able to hit the ball better." |
