Pisgah softball team nips Lady Mustangs in eighth

Pisgah pushed across a run in the bottom of the eighth to edge Smoky Mountain 4-3 as the softball season came to an end May 2 at Canton.

The Lady Mustangs finished the year 3-18 overall and 1-11 in the Western Athletic Conference.

"We played extremely well," Coach Melissa Hill said. "They played like you would want a team to play at the end of the season. They proved all their hard work and effort throughout the season made them better ballplayers."

The Sugar Bears scored the winning run without a hit. A walk, error and hit batsman loaded the bases with nobody out. On a strikeout, the ball got away from the catcher with the runner scoring from third.

Pisgah nearly won in the bottom of the seventh with a runner at third and nobody out. Hill said Shay Shular made an excellent defensive play at third when she snared a line drive and caught the runner off base for a double play.

"She had an incredible day," Hill said of Shular, who had seven assists and put outs.

"Our outfield had another good day," the coach added. "They had several hard hit balls they got back on and caught."

The Lady Mustangs scored in the first on Katie Crispıs RBI double after a walk to Megan Rhinehart.

Natalie Hoglen singled and scored in the first for a 1-1 tie. The Sugar Bears went up 2-1 in the second without a hit.

SM scored twice in the fifth to go ahead 3-2. Rhinehart and Crisp singled, and Shannon Ensley walked to load the bases. Amber Stephens had an RBI single, and Dorothy Keane drove in a run with an infield out.

Hoglen singled and came home on a sacrifice fly in the fifth tying it 3-3.

Hoglen had two hits in three at-bats.

Rhinehart was two of three while Crisp and Stephens went two of four to pace the Lady Mustangs.
