Hayesville holds off late Smoky Mountain rally

SMHS's Amanda Magruder

Amanda Magruder is on her way to third base with a leadoff triple in Smoky Mountain's 13-12 loss to Hayesville Monday.

Smoky Mountain's rally came up just short as Hayesville escaped with a 13-13 non-conference softball victory Monday at Webster.

The Lady Mustangs (3-17) trailed 13-7 entering the bottom of the seventh. They scored five runs on a double by Kristen Wilson, singles by Amanda Magruder and Megan Rhinehart and two Hayesville errors.

The Lady Jackets probably aren't superstitious after the victory as they scored 13 runs on 13 hits.

"I was pleased with our determination which showed in the seventh inning by coming back," Coach Melissa Hill said. "Both teams hit well, but our errors hurt us."

SM had nine hits but committed six errors.

Hayesville jumped in front 3-0 in the top of the first, but SM responded with four runs in the bottom of the frame. Magruder led off with a triple and scored on Rhinehart's ground out. Crisp's single was the only other hit of the inning, but two walks and an error helped the Lady Mustangs push three more runs across.

Rhinehart walked and scored in the second for a 5-3 edge. Crisp had a single for the lone hit of the frame.
Hayesville went back on top with three runs in the third. Base hits by Dorothy Keane, Jessica Henry and Magruder helped SM tie it 6-6 in the bottom of the third.

The Lady Jackets took the lead for good with two runs in the fourth. They added three in the fifth for an 11-6 advantage.

Keane walked and eventually scored on a wild pitch in the last of the fifth making it 11-7.

Two runs by the Lady Jackets in the sixth allowed them to hold on for the victory after the SM rally.

Magruder had three hits in five at-bats. Crisp was two of five.
