Tuscola rallies for softball victory over SM

Shay Shular connects for a two-run single in the first inning of Smoky Mountain's 9-7 softball loss Friday at Tuscola.

Tuscola rallied form a 4-0 deficit to defeat Smoky Mountain 9-7 in Western Athletic Conference softball action Friday at Tuscola.

The Lady Mustangs, now 1-7 in the WAC, had four of their five hits in the first inning. However, Tuscola pitcher Amy Brown yielded no hits after the second.

"We started off playing very well and built a lead but then stopped hitting," Coach Melissa Hill said. Two-run singles by Shay Shular and Kristen Wilson put SM on top 4-0 in the top of the first.

Timara Barker also had a hit in the inning while Shannon Ensley and Heather Adams drew walks.
The Lady Mountaineers cut the gap to 4-2 in the bottom of the second. One run scored on a wild pitch, and Carmello Carrington had an RBI single.

SM's Amanda Magruder singled and scored on a wild pitch in the second for a 5-2 lead.

Singles by Amy McClure and Katherine Quinn helped Tuscola score three times in the fourth to pull into a 5-5 tie.

Julie McCracken singled to start a two-run fifth giving the Lady Mounties a 7-5 advantage.

Ensley walked with the bases loaded bringing the Lady Mustangs within 7-6 in the top of the sixth.

Melissa Corbin and Emily Hyatt both walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth as Tuscola went up 9-6.

SM scored once in the seventh when Megan Rhinehart walked with the bases loaded.

McClure was two of three at the plate and was the only player for either team with more than one hit.

Amber Stephens allowed six Tuscola hits. She was relieved by Adams in the sixth.
