Smoky Mountain slips by Brevard on Woody's goal |
|
Abi Woody scored the game's lone goal six minutes into the second half as Smoky Mountain edged Brevard 1-0 on April 26 in Western Athletic Conference soccer action at Carr Hooper Stadium/Babe Howell Field.
With the victory the Lady Mustangs clinched a spot in the state 3-A playoffs. "That was one of the big goals," Coach Chris Griffin said. "This is our fourth year in a row of making the playoffs. The girls have worked so hard and deserve a playoff spot." Woody took a cross pass from Melissa Collins on the left side and scored from about eight yards out with the ball going into the right corner of the net. Brevard held a 15-9 advantage in shots, but SM goalie Lindsey Lewis was up to the task with nine saves. Crisanne Jacques made four saves for the Lady Blue Devils. "They got off some shots, but Lindsey played the angles well and they went right to her," Griffin said. "Although they had more shots, we played them pretty evenly," he said. The game was similar to the first meeting between the teams when the Lady Mustangs won 1-0 although Brevard got off more shots. "It was a very hard fought, aggressive game," the coach said. "We won the 50-50s more in the second half. Our first touches were a lot better in the second half." The goal scored by the Lady Mustangs was their 100th of the season extending their school record. |
