Abi Woody sets records as Lady Mustangs romp

Abi Woody became Smoky Mountain's single season scoring leader as the Lady Mustangs (15-1) blasted Murphy 16-0 on the road last Thursday.

Woody scored five goals and had two assists giving her 29 goals and 16 assists on the season, both school records. She set the season points record a week earlier and now has 74 points.

Kaitlin Ritchie and Melanie Edwards both had four goals and two assists for SM.

For the Lady Mustangs, it was their second straight rout of a first-year Cherokee County team. They ripped Andrews 15-0 two days earlier.

"This was much like the Andrews game," Coach Chris Griffin said. "They're both first-year programs. We felt very confident going in. We wanted to work on our one touches, give and gos and overlaps. Playing a team like that it would be easy to let down, but we stayed focused on the game and played hard."

The Lady Mustangs pounded Murphy goalie Emily Watson with 45 shots. She made 22 saves. The Lady Bulldogs did not get off a shot.

The scoring parade began early with Melissa Collins scoring two minutes into the contest.

Woody scored the next two goals at 3:45 and 5:00. Keely Moll assisted on the second for a 3-0 lead.

Two goals 45 seconds apart came off corner kicks by Edwards. Ritchie converted at the six-minute mark and Woody scored at 6:45 making it 5-0.

The margin was 7-0 at halftime. The last two goals before intermission were by Ritchie at 16:00 and Edwards on a penalty kick at 27:00.

Goals by Woody at the 44-minute mark and Ritchie two minutes later built the lead to 9-0.

Edwards took over and scored three goals in a six-minute stretch extending the margin to 12-0. Woody assisted on the goals at the 60- and 63-minute marks. Ritchie had an assist at the 66-minute mark.

A penalty kick by Evie Graning put SM up 13-0 at the 69-minute mark.

The lead was 14-0 after Woody scored at the 73-minute mark.

Ritchie assisted on the final two goals, which came from Sarah Whatley with two minutes left and Edwards with a minute to play.
