Derrick Hawk strikes out 14 as Smoky Mountain tops Tuscola (continued) |
|
The fifth inning rally started with one out when Kyle Bewsey doubled. Hawk blooped a double to right with Bewsey stopping at third, and Jake Lunnen was intentionally walked to load the bases. Trent Dillard's sacrifice fly tied it, and Joseph Ensley's double gave SM a 3-2 edge. Josh Carnes capped the uprising by blasting a home run with two men on base for a 6-2 lead.
"We had a lot of good at-bats in that inning," Hawkins said. "Trent had a sacrifice fly, and Joseph hit the ball where it was pitched. Josh is hitting the ball very well." SM added an insurance run in the sixth when Matt Hopkins and Hawk singled and the Mountaineers committed an error. The Mustangs went up 1-0 in the second as Dillard double and Ensley and Carnes singled. Tuscola tied it in the fourth on an RBI single by Justin Cook. Mark Golden singled in a run in the fifth putting the Mounties up 2-1. Ensley and Carnes both had two hits in three at-bats. "Derrick continues to be outstanding on the mound," Hawkins said. Caleb McConnell was the losing pitcher. "I was impressed with Tuscola's pitcher," Hawkins said. "If he could get ahead, he was real tough. As the game went on, we started to hit the first good fast ball we got." Playing at home, the Mustang JVs lost to Tuscola 11-0. SM had only three hits, including a double by Jake Day. Josh Day was the losing pitcher. |
