Carnes, Hawk help Mustangs set school record for season victories

Kyle Bewsey connects for a base hit in the third inning of Smoky Mountain's 11-0 rout of Enka last week.

Smoky Mountain set a school record for wins in a season with an 11-0 rout last Thursday at Enka.

Josh Carnes hit two home runs while Derrick Hawk turned in a brilliant pitching performance as the Mustangs improved to 18-3. They remained tied for first place in the Western Athletic Conference at 10-1.

The game was called after five innings due to the 10-run rule.

"We played real well," Coach Tim Hawkins said. "I think it was the most complete game we've had at the plate all year. We swung the bats really well top to bottom. We felt if we could score early, we'd have them in a bind with Derrick pitching.
Hawk (6-2) was dominant on the mound and had a home run at the plate. Of the game's 15 outs, 12 came on strikeouts. He allowed only three hits and walked two.

"Derrick carried on with what he's been doing all year," Hawkins said. "He's been dominant in our conference. He's the best pitcher I've seen here since I've been an assistant or head coach. He's a lot of fun to watch for me."

Trent Dillard was three of four with a home run. Carnes was two of three, and Jake Lunnen was two of four.

"Josh had a great day," Hawkins said. "He's really stepped up to the challenge behind the plate. He's seeing the ball good when he's hitting."

The Mustangs began the rout in the second when Dillard and Carnes hit solo home runs. Brad McAbee singled in the inning to help set up a run that scored on an error.

SM broke the game open with a five-run third to go up 8-0. Hawk walked, and singles by Lunnen and Dillard produced a run. Matt Hopkins singled with an error on the play allowing a run to score. Carnes capped the rally with his three-run blast.

In the Mustang fifth, McAbee was hit by a pitch, Kyle Bewsey walked and Hawk belted a three-run homer.

Logan Phillips was the losing pitcher.

The Mustang JVs are 7-12 after a 4-3 loss to Enka at home. Josh Day was a tough luck loser as all four Jet runs were unearned. Jared Day was two of three at the plate, and Brody Frizzell was two of four.

"We got great pitching," Coach Bill Rice said. "Unfortunately, we had a couple of errors that allowed their runs to score. In close games, mistakes are going to be magnified."
