Smith, Green, Jones help SM claim spot in state 3-A playoffs (continued)

Jones was steady throughout the game and finished with 18 points, eight assists and six steals. "Nichole was consistent all night," the coach said. "We came up with some big plays and had an outstanding floor game."

Erwin was led by Jackie Black with 16 points. Ashley Young followed with 15, and Kelly Teague had 12.

After trailing for virtually all the first half, the Lady Mustangs took the lead for good at 33-30 as Green hit a three-pointer with 7:27 left in the third quarter. Smith hit three consecutive put backs for a 41-35 lead at the 4:35 mark.

Jones scored four points in the last 15 seconds of the stanza extending the margin to 52-43.

SM scored the first six points of the fourth quarter for a 58-43 lead with 6:21 remaining.

The closest the Lady Warriors came the rest of the way was 60-50 on Lacey Grogan's basket with 5:17 to play.

An 8-2 run, including four by Lindsey Lewis, put the Lady Mustangs up 68-52 at the 3:23 mark.

The game's biggest lead was 79-58 on two Christy Pruett free throws with 39.8 seconds to go.

Erwin scored the game's first five points, but an 8-2 spurt gave SM an 8-7 edge on Smith's basket with 4:34 on the clock.

Young put the Lady Warriors back in front 9-8 at the 3:42 mark. They led 15-11 at the quarter break when Lauren Shade scored at the buzzer.

Erwin's biggest lead was 29-20 on Black's basket with 3:07 to go in the half.

Five points by Green, all from the foul line, keyed a 10-1 run to close the half. A three-pointer by Jones with 45 seconds left tied it 30-30, and that's how it stood at intermission.

Smith was the top rebounder with 10. Abi Woody and Nathalie Broom both had six.

Smith hit 12 of 17 field goals. Green made seven field goals, including a three-pointer, and eight foul shots. Jones connected on five field goals, including two treys, and six of seven free throws.

Lewis finished with eight points while Pruett and Courtney Bryson both had two.

The Lady Mustangs shot 48.3 percent from the floor.

The Lady Warrior JVs held SM to five points in the first half and took a 56-29 victory. They led at quarter breaks by scores of 19-4, 29-5 and 37-19.

Jennifer Hyatt led the Lady Mustangs with seven points.

"We just couldn't get our heads in the game," Coach Heather Broom said. "They came to play, and we didn't."
