Smoky Mountain is victim as Pisgah wins first league game (continued)

Derrick Hawk hit one of two free throws with 22.3 seconds left cutting the gap to 58-55. Two foul shots by Long pushed the lead to 60-55 with 17 seconds to play. Roper's basket made it 60-57 with eight seconds to go.

Ricky Brindley sealed the win by hitting one of two free throws with 6.6 seconds on the clock. The Mustangs led 29-26 on Wheatley's follow shot with 6:32 to go in the third stanza.

Pisgah reeled off seven straight points, including five by Fretwell, for a 42-37 lead on Slade Singleton's basket with 29 seconds on the clock. The Bears were up 42-40 entering the fourth period.

SM's biggest lead was 16-10 on Roper's trey with 44 seconds left in the opening stanza. The margin was 16-13 at the quarter break.

The Bears scored 10 straight points spanning the first and second periods for a 20-16 advantage after Gibson's basket with 5:31 remaining in the half. They extended the lead to 26-20 on Long's bucket at the 2:07 mark.

The Mustangs scored the final seven points of the half and took a 27-26 lead on Hawk's three-pointer at the buzzer.

Wheatley hit five field goals, including a three-pointer, and five of six foul shots. Dyer and Roper scored all their points from the floor with Roper making a pair of treys.

Bennett and Wade both finished with six points while Hawk had five.

Hartbarger said Roper showed improvement.

The Mustang JVs are 9-7 after a 56-45 win. They displayed balanced scoring as Landon Farley, Jared Day and Jeff Davis all had seven points.

"The second half was our best half so far," Coach Jimmy Roper said. "The defense was pretty good." Roper said Jared Day did a good job running the offense. Lance Gabbard and Josh Day were cited for their play on the boards. The coach said he was glad to have Brent Robinson back in the lineup after an injury.

SM led 9-8 after the first quarter and 25-24 at intermission before opening a 41-30 advantage through three periods.
