A group gathered Saturday (April 15) to do some spring cleaning at Poteet Park in Sylva. While Jay Spiro (left) redistributed mulch, the four-man of (below, from left) Jay Coward, Mark Thompson, Greg Duff and Charles McConnell positioned a new bench for installation. Other things on the "to-do" list included planting shurbs and relocating signs. Sylva Rotary Club members under took the project to renovate the park last September with the aid of more than 1,700 volunteers. Vandals recently added to the work needed at the Sylva park with graffitti on playground equipment and inside bathroom. Those responsible for defacing the park have been apprehended, according to Sylva Police Chief Jeff Jamison. |

Greening Up Tot LotLandscaping was the order of the day last Saturday (April 15) when volunteers gathered at Sylva's Poteet Park for some spring cleaning. Keith Pannell, a member of the Sylva Volunteer Fire Department and a groundskeeper for the N.C. Center for the Advancement of Teaching in Cullowhee, set out dog hobble shrubs in the Tot Lot, while others planted what will some day be shade trees along the playground's perimeter. A first anniversary celebration for the park is being planned for this September, when those involved in the renovation will be invited back for a cookout and painting party, said Sylva Rotary Club member Jay Spiro. The Rotary Club and town of Sylva undertook the job of replacing playground equipment last September. |
