Jackson Plaza called 'workable site' for P.O.

By Carey Phillips

Another step has been taken toward building a new Sylva Post Office at Jackson Plaza.

In a letter to Mayor Brenda Oliver dated April 24, Bob Hill of the U.S. Postal Service's Greensboro regional office writes that negotiations have produced an offer from the Grindstaff Trust and owners/operators of Jackson Plaza "that will produce a workable site."

"It's just the next step in the process we're going through," Oliver said. "Negotiations are very positive with the property owners."

Hill's letter states that in compliance with postal regulations, members of the public may make written comments within a 30-day period. Letters should be directed to Vice President, Facilities, P.O. Box 27497, Greensboro, N.C. 27498-1103.

The proposed facility would be built in a wooded area on the Roses end of the shopping center, said Oliver, who estimated that the post office could draw 1,300 vehicles per day to the site. "I'm real excited about it," she said. "I think it would be an outstanding location and bring some vitality back to that section of town. I'm hoping it will stimulate some retail development up there."

The current facility on Landis Street opened in 1965. Postmaster Steve Allen said the 5,500-square-foot building is not large enough as the number of rural routes served locally have gone from three to six in recent years.
