Eddie and Phillip Stephens' bulldozer work

Eddie and Phillip Stephens have done extensive bulldozer work in preparing handicapped trails at Pinnacle Park, Jay Coward told the Sylva Town Board. "While we have paid them for some work, they've donated their time and equipment well over what we paid them."

Jay Coward, chairman of the Pinnacle Park Foundation, told the Sylva Town Board Thursday (April 6) that a system of handicapped trails in the lower level of the park is "well on the way."

The 1,088-acre site, which consists of the headwaters of Fisher Creek, served as the town watershed for 75 years. Its elevations range from 2,600 feet to 5,810 feet.

"We've built a rock retaining wall in the parking lot and completed the rough work of bulldozing and moving rocks," Coward told the board. "We're ready for the next phase of raking and cutting roots."

A picnic for the town board is scheduled at Pinnacle Park Thursday, May 4, while a work day at the park has been scheduled for Saturday, May 20.
Rock retaining wall at Pinnacle Park

A rock retaining wall has been built in the parking lot at Pinnacle Park. Much of the rough rock work has been completed at the park but a work day has been set for May 20 to move additional rock, rake the trails and cut roots.

Coward proposed that the town partner with the Sylva Rotary Club in completing the handicapped park section. "Those of you who worked on the Sylva Park Project know the Rotary Club has a good track record with parks."

Coward told the board of recent vandalism at the park where an individual was caught in the act of trying to pull the gate down with a chain attached to a four-wheel-drive vehicle. Four-wheelers have caused additional damage to the park, he said, noting, "we have others areas in the county designed for four-wheelers."

He presented the board with a resolution "which gives teeth to items not allowed at Pinnacle Park." Those include trapping, baiting, hunting, as well as destroying, removing or defacing property and littering.
