Let’s stick to representative democracy
To the Editor:
During my run for Sylva Town Board I had fun doing the work of campaigning. I enjoyed riding my bike around all the neighborhoods in Sylva putting up signs and talking to people about our town. I feel that meeting and talking to people is the cornerstone of a representative democracy, and small towns like Sylva are unfortunately some of the last places that have been free of outside influence.
I understand that this is the norm in the larger races in the country (although some candidates are trying to push back), but in a small town I still believe that it is possible to get out and talk to your neighbors and convince them personally that you can be their voice in local government.
Moving forward I hope we can keep Sylva an example of what representative democracy should look like and reject nationally funded organizations in our politics.
