Dorothy Painter

Mrs. Dorothy Farrior Painter of Sylva, N.C., was peacefully called home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2019 at the full age of 99.

She looked forward to this heavenly reunion with her husband, James Vernon Painter of Sylva, and her eldest son, James Vernon Painter, Jr.

She was born on May 26, 1920, to the late William Henry Farrior Sr. and Thelma E. Williams Farrior. In addition to her husband, eldest son and parents, she was predeceased by siblings Ethel Browder, Frances Jones, William Henry Farrior, Jr., Asha Watson, David Farrior and Emily Farrior.

She leaves behind, in the caring trust of her Savior, her daughter, Asha Lojuan Howard and her husband Thomas Wesley Howard; her youngest son, Allen Farrior Painter and his wife Jill Deese Painter, both of Sylva; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom she loved dearly.

All who have known her will forever treasure her memory with great affection.

She was a faithful and sweet caring mother and wife, and brought laughter, comfort and encouragement to all of our lives. She was studious in both her prayer life, and in faithfully writing her family and friends. Most of all she was an unpretentious, bold witness for Christ to whom she owed her all.

But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God. I trust in the steadfast love of God forever and ever. – Psalm 52:8.

She was a graduate of the Commercial Department of Women’s College of the University of North Carolina in Greensboro and attended Western Carolina Teachers College in Cullowhee. She was the bookkeeper at Southern Landscapers, Inc. in Cocoa Beach, Fla., that was established in 1957, and owned and operated with her husband until they retired back to the mountains where they first met and started their family together.

A tribute was held at Appalachian Funeral Services, followed by a graveside service at Keener Cemetery on Saturday, Aug. 10, 2019, at 5 p.m.
