Shirley Cox, 85, of Sylva went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2020.
A resident of Jackson County for most of her life, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Nadine Skinner. She was born on July 23, 1935, in Mecklenburg County, N.C. Shirley met William Durwood “Dag” Cox in high school. They married on July 2, 1952, in Orlando, Fla. Together they raised three children, Debbie, Jeff and David.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Dag Cox.
Shirley was a member of East Sylva Baptist Church where she loved doing the Children’s Sermon and making desserts for the weekly dinners. For many years, Shirley worked as a Children’s Minister at Trinity Baptist Church in Apopka, Fla.
Shirley enjoyed camping, picnicking, craft making, sewing and cooking. She was a devoted wife, mother and caregiver.
Shirley is survived by her children, Debbie (Bill) Douglas of Sylva, Jeff (Lynn) Cox of Jacksonville, Fla., David (Lora) Cox of Sylva; four grandchildren, Andrea (Erik) Cox, Ashley Cox, Mitchell (Kellie) Smith, and Madison Cox; one great-granddaughter on the way; her brother, Frank (Susan) Skinner, and a close friend, Mickey Walton.
No services are planned at this time.
