Ernie Lee Akins, 68, of Tuckasegee passed away peacefully surrounded by his family Sunday, Oct. 6, 2019.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was the son of the late Paul and Geneva Akins. A member of New Hope Baptist Church, Ernie was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. He loved his truck driving, especially his long distance truck driving. He enjoyed playing his guitar and listening to country music. He loved his family, his friends and his dogs.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Ronnie Akins.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Linda Akins; his children, Johnny Akins (Jessica) of Tuckasegee, Julie Owens (Markus) of Tuckasegee, Kim Bryson (John) of Sylva, Ernie Akins Jr. of High Point; grandchildren, Tasha, Tabitha, Sarah, Ashley, Trenten, Jacob, Kyersten, Alisha and Mikaela; great-grandchildren, Makinley, Brinley, Natalie and Emmit; brother, Larry Akins (Sheila) of Sylva; several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct, 12, 2019, in the chapel of Appalachian Funeral Services with the Revs. Markus Owens and Jeremiah McCall officiating.
The family will receive friends prior to the service from noon until 2 p.m. at the funeral home.
