John Loyd Kirk, 84, of Mills River died Monday, June 15, 2020, in his home surrounded by his family.

A native of Sylva, N.C., he was the son of the late John Paul Kirk and Shirley Davis Kirk. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Leone Ehlis Kirk.

John Loyd served in the U.S. Air Force obtaining the rank of Captain. He received an engineering degree from N.C. State and then received his MBA from USC. Loyd was employed by TriCore Engineering in Long Beach, Calif., and then by Howard Hughes before becoming the owner and operator of Forest Manor Inn in Asheville. For 37 years, he and his wife, Leone, welcomed guests from around the world, retiring in 2008.

He was a scout master and active leader in Troop 8 Boy Scouts in Asheville for more than 30 years. Loyd was a founding member of CIBO, served as president of the N.C. Hotel Motel Association, was a member of the Air Quality Board and actively supported the local Republican Committee. He had a passion for cars, shooting sports and deep-sea fishing. He was of the Methodist faith.

John Loyd is survived by his partner, Samantha Wynn; two daughters, Krista Patterson of Sykesville, Md., and Michaela Allen of Annapolis, Md.; a son, Michael Kirk of Boone, N.C.; five grandsons, John Patterson, Julian Patterson, Matt Allen, Ben Allen and John Kirk; and three brothers, Bill Kirk of Kingsport, Tenn., Dayton Kirk of Topsail, N.C., and Jerry Kirk of Land O’ Lakes, Fla.

A private family service will be held. John Loyd will be interred at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain, N.C.
