JoAnn Phillips Teague, age 79, of Waynesville passed away on Thursday, Nov. 26, 2020, at Haywood Regional Medical Center.
A native of Jackson County, she was a daughter of the late Rasho and Elenora Cook Phillips. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and Jimmy Phillips.
JoAnn was a graduate of Sylva-Webster High School and received her master’s degree from Western Carolina University. She was a member of Allens Creek Baptist Church. JoAnn retired from the Haywood County School System with 30 years of service. She was Teacher of the Year in 1985, was guardian ad litem program volunteer in 2002 and was District Support Administrator of the 1988-89 school year. JoAnn was permanent honorary chairman of the Haywood Democrat Party in 2011.
JoAnn is survived by her husband, David Hyatt; son, Stanley Pressley, of Clemson, S.C.; and a brother, Dale Phillips and his wife Nancy of Sylva.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov.29, 2020, in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Rev. Eddie Deitz officiating.
Burial followed at New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family received friends from 5 until 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 28, 2020, at the funeral home.
