He was born March 27, 1935, in Jackson County, N.C., to the late Paul O. Hooper and Ola Fisher Hooper. In addition to his parents, his sister, JoMeta Thomas, and brother, Michael Hooper, preceded him in death.

He leaves behind his loving wife, Jean McCall Hooper of Brevard. He is also survived by sons, Roger D. Hooper (Cheri) and their eight children and 14 grandchildren; Wayne D. Hooper (Jennifer) and their four children and one grandchild; Toby D. Hooper (Heidi) and their two children; sisters, Louetta Hubbard (Sherrill) and Paulette Gasperson (Larry); brother, Kevin Hooper (Dianne); and many nieces and nephews. Bascom also leaves behind his North and South Carolina hunting families; too many to even list but who were especially dear to his heart.

A celebration of life service was held Dec. 12, 2021, at 2 p.m. at Moses Creek Baptist Church, 966 Moses Creek Road, Cullowhee NC 28723.

Graveside services followed with friends and family gathering in the church fellowship building sharing food and memories.

Bascom was a legend among hunters, passing along the tradition of hound hunting. As said by his grandson, “Pa you were my idol from the very start. Everything I know about hound hunting came straight from you.” His legacy has spanned from coast to coast. Pa Bascom was a straight shooter in his words and in the woods. He didn’t believe in wasting words or ammunition. What a reunion there must be with the bear hunters and family who went before him. Words cannot describe the depth of his love for family and friends to only be exceeded by his love and faith in God. Bascom was a 32nd degree Mason, a Shriner and a member of the Scottish Rite.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gideon’s International.
