Burrus Elmore Jones, 91, of Sylva went home to be with the Lord on Monday, March 27, 2023.
Born in Yazoo City, Miss., on Feb. 29, 1932, he was the son of the late Burrus Elzy and Virgnina Jones.
A resident of Jackson County for over 30 years, Burrus was a U.S. Army veteran and chaplain for American Legion Post 104 in Sylva. He was also a deacon and member of East Sylva Baptist Church.
He had worked for over 41 years as a salesman for Southwestern Petroleum Corp.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three of his sisters.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Nancy; four children, Judy Harris of Sylva, Malinda Kapfhammer of Sylva, Jenny (Sam) Kyzer of Mooresville, N.C., Burrus (Deborah) Jones of Falls Church, Va. nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Linda (Tom) Parsons, Lucie Riggsbee.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Friday, March 31, 2023, at East Sylva Baptist Church, with the Revs. Charles Dean and Reed Benson officiating.
The family received friends from 2-3 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
Burial followed at Old Field Cemetery.
Burrus will be forever loved, his memory always cherished and he is already painfully missed.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to East Sylva Baptist Church, 61 Faith Ave., Sylva, NC 28779; or to American Legion Post 104, P.O. Box 104, Sylva, NC 28779.
