Obituary Information

The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Ned Morris

Richard Ned Morris 86, of Canton, died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2003, at Haywood Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services will be private.

He was a native of Haywood County, where he lived for several years. Son of the late Bill and Anne Hipps Morris, he was a past master of the Dillsboro Masonic Lodge AF & AM and a member of the Pigeon River Lodge 386 AF & AM. He was a Mason for more than 53 years and was a Shriner and member of the Haywood County Shrine Club. He was a member of Canton Presbyterian Church.

He was educated in the Canton schools where he was an all-state football player. He attended Brevard College, N.C. State University, and Western Carolina University, where he was a member of the football team at each school.

Following college he worked for Champion Paper and Fiber Co. in Pasadena, Texas. Later, he was with the federal government on the Fontana Dam project in Fontana and the Manhattan project in Oak Ridge, Tenn.

He moved to Sylva where he was owner of the Sports Center and was co-owner of drive-in theaters in Brevard, Sylva and Franklin. Later he became co-owner of the C & M Oil Co. in Canton. He retired from the State Alcohol Beverage Control as an agent.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, William Michael Morris; and two brothers, Bill and Frank Morris.

Surviving is his wife of 62 years, Kathryn Sandlin Morris.

Memorials may be made to the Sandlin-Morris Scholarship Fund for students of Western North Carolina at Western Carolina University Foundation, 401 Robinson Administration Building, Cullowhee, N.C. 28723.

Zilla McMahan

Zilla Buchanan McMahan, 91, of Gay Road, Sylva, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003, at Skyland Care Center after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 22, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Benny Bagwell and Clifford Parker officiated. Burial was at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23, in Fairview Memorial Gardens.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late Thomas L. and Bessie McMahan Buchanan. She was a member of New Savannah Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Georgie Marie Austin, and one brother, James Buchanan.

Surviving are her husband of 68 years, George Clyde McMahan; two daughters, Virgie Mae Guyer of Franklin and Janice Ann Lyerly of Dillard, Ga.; three sons, Roy Lyle "R.L." McMahan of Franklin, Ted Lawson McMahan of Clinton, Tenn., and Benny James McMahan of Inman, S.C.; five sisters, Emma Lee McMahan, Marie Jones and Jessie Hall, all of Sylva, Roby Green of Florida and Hazel Jones of Franklin; one brother, Adam Buchanan of Sylva; nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and three step grandchildren.

Amos Worley

Amos C. Worley, 72, of Rushmore Drive, Sylva, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 23, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Revs. Mike Farmer and Kent Lowdermilk officiated. Burial was in Stillwell Cemetery.

A native of Haywood County, he had lived in Jackson County for the past 33 years. A retired mechanic, he had worked with Jackson Paper and was a member of Beaverdam Baptist Church. Son of the late Henry and Lottie Parham Worley, he was a U.S. Navy veteran of Vietnam.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Alvin and Albert Worley.

Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Betty Cabe Worley; one daughter, Debra W. Farmer of Sylva; three sons, Danny Worley and Dale Worley, both of Sylva and Darwin Worley of Lake Oconee, S.C.; three sisters, Alice King of Canton and Annette Sizemore and Alma Lawning, both of Asheville; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Bill Pettigrew

William B. "Bill" Pettigrew, 69, of Purple Mountain Road, Sylva, died Friday, Dec. 19, 2003, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 22, at Lovedale Baptist Church. The Rev. Mike Farmer and Kenneth Nicholson officiated. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens with military rites conducted by the U.S. Air Force, Sylva American Legion Post 104 and Jackson County Rescue Squad. Pallbearers were members of the Jackson County Rescue Squad.

A native of Ruleville, Miss., he had lived in Jackson County since 1973. He was a heavy equipment operator and had formerly worked for the City of Miami. He was a member of the Jackson County Rescue Squad for 21 years and was the former captain.

He was a member of the Dillsboro Masonic Lodge 459 and a member of Woodland Church of Christ. Son of the late William Alexander and Dorothy Holloway Pettigrew, he was a U.S. Air Force veteran serving in the Korean War.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Alta Jean Groover Pettigrew; three daughters, Dorothy Pettigrew and Marjorie Stephens, both of Sylva, and Linda Currie of Rock Hill, S.C.; four sisters, Edna Shows and Dot Barrett, both of Houston, Texas, and Joan Fleming and Peggy Williams, both of Drew, Miss.; three brothers, Tommy Pettigrew of Houston, Jim Pettigrew of Drew, and Steve Pettigrew of Tremont, Miss., five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Jimmie Cooper

Jimmie Sherrill Cooper, 82, of Whittier, died Thursday, Dec. 18, 2003, at Harris Regional Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 21, at Olivet United Methodist Church. The Revs. Steve Phillippi and Mark Rogers officiated. Burial was in Sherrill Cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late George and Dora Queen Sherrill. She attended Olivet School, Qualla School and Sylva High School.

She was a lifelong member of Olivet United Methodist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher, historian, treasurer and secretary. She was the primary author of the church history published in 2000 for the 100th anniversary celebration of the church.

For several years she and her husband owned and operated Cooper’s Cash Grocery in Bryson City.

She was preceded in death by one son, Joe; and one brother, Frank.

Surviving are her husband of 64 years, Ralph Cooper; one daughter, Joyce Cooper of Whittier; and one sister, Pearle Reagan of Whittier.

Joyce Huskey

Joyce Lynne Huskey, 40, of 32 Hundred Acre Tract, Cherokee, died Monday, Dec. 15, 2003, at her residence.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 19, in the chapel of Crisp Funeral Home, Bryson City. The Rev. James "Bo" Parris officiated. Burial was in Swain Memorial Park.

A native of Swain County, she was the daughter of the late John Huskey Jr. and Lillie Mae Bowers Huskey.

Surviving are two brothers, Darryl Huskey Jr. and Johnny Huskey, both of Cherokee.

Verley Woodard

Verley Woodard, 84, of Ozark Lane, Sylva, died Friday, Dec. 19, 2003, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 22, at Zion Hill Baptist Church, of which he was a member and former training union director. The Revs. Steve Webb, Wesley Hooper and Eddie Stillwell officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Kyle Johnson, Doyle Woodard, Michael Woodard, Jamie Ledford, Cody Angel and Jason Bradley. Honorary pallbearers were Darrell Woodard and Lloyd Webb.

A native of Jackson County where he lived most of his life, he was a retired carpenter. He was a son of the late Rev. George and Ella Webb Woodard.

He was preceded in death by a son Lewis Woodard; two brothers, Lester and Alonzo Woodard; and two sisters, Edna Bingham and Gertrude Woodard.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Christine Burnette Woodard; five daughters, Barbara Sorrells of Cullowhee, Irene Welch and Sandra Bradley, both of Sylva, Pauline Ledford and Thelma Angel, both of Franklin; two sons, Troy Woodard of Franklin and George Woodard of Sylva; one sister, Villa Mae Adams of Sylva; 14 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Francis Anders

Francis Glenn "Frenchie" Anders, 87, of Pasadena, Texas, and Sylva, died Friday, Dec. 19, 2003.

Funeral services were held at First United Methodist Church of Pasadana Tuesday, Dec. 23, at 1 p.m. Burial followed with a Masonic graveside service at Forest Park Cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rachel Anders.

Surviving are two sons, Glenn of Ohio and Robert of Sylva; three sisters, Mary Brooks and Genna Harman, both of Texas, and Reba Parker of Arkansas; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Rachel and F.G. Anders Scholarship Fund at San Jacinto College, Pasadena, Texas.

Beulah Frady

Beulah Oliver Frady of Sylva died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2003, in Skyland Care Center.

Maurice Morrill

Maurice Morrill of Cullowhee died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2003, in Haywood Regional Medical Center.

A memorial mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 24, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Richard Kehn

Richard L. "Dick" Kehn, 68, of Mill Creek Road, Cullowhee, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003, at his residence after a brief illness.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23, at Cashiers Baptist Church. The Rev. Art Fowler officiated. Burial will be held at noon Monday, Dec. 29, at Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain.

A native of Warren, Ohio, he lived in Jackson County for more than 23 years. He was a son of the late Ralph and Mary Miller Kehn. He was a retired U.S. Army veteran and member of Cashiers Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Gwen Schlarb Kehn; and one son, Donald Kehn.

Surviving are his wife of four years, Evelyn Ralston Kehn; two daughters, Diana Miller and Julia Little of Houston, Texas; one son, Dale Kehn of Weatherford, Texas; one brother, Anthony "Tony" Kehn of Sarasota, Fla.; and six grandchildren.
