Emma HarrodDr. Emma "Kay" Krall Harrod, 71, of Isle of Palms, S.C., died Nov. 10, 2001, after a brief illness. A memorial gathering was held Nov. 14 at Stuhr Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.A native of Eaton, Ohio, she was the daughter of Bert and Mildred Krall. She attended Jackson Township High School. She received a bachelor of science degree from Miami University and her medical degree from Harvard Medical School in 1957. She did postgraduate training at the University of Minnesota Hospital and the Childrens' Hospital of Buffalo.

She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa Society, diplomat of the American Board of Pediatrics and sat on the Rand Capital Corp. board of directors. She worked in the fields of clinical pediatrics, genetics, maternal and child health, student health and substance abuse. She worked part time with Sylva Pediatrics from November 1999 until February 2001.
She was involved in charity work throughout her life and supported the YWCA and March of Dimes, among others. Surviving are her husband, David Harrod; children, David Harrod, Eric Harrod, Richard Harrod, Kathy Lehman, Jan Harrod, Mary Ellen Harrod, Tristram Ryvers Ellicott and Juliette Cook; and two sisters, Florence Bowmen and Mary Essex. Lynn ChildersLynn H. Childers, 68, of Whittier's Wilmot community, died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, in Mission-St. Joseph's Health System after an extended illness.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, in Wilmot Baptist Church, which he attended. The Revs. Johnny Ray Davis and Johnny Norris officiated. Burial was in Wilmot Community Cemetery on Sley Holler Road. A native of Jackson County, where he lived most of his life, he was the son of the late Van and Ernie Stewart Childers. He retired from General Motors and the N.C. Department of Transportation maintenance department. He was preceded in death by three brothers: Duane, Morton and Frank Childers; and one sister, Thelma Bryson. Surviving are his wife of 47 1/2 years, Nora Hannah Childers; one daughter, Angela "Angie" Nations of Whittier; two sons, Lynden Keith Childers of Sylva and Lyle Anthony Childers of Whittier; two sisters, Alta Bryson and Irene Moses, both of Candler; three brothers, Crayton Childers of Waynesville, Clell Childers of Arden and Charlie Childers of Cullowhee; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Betty NicholsonBetty Jane Nicholson, 69, of Sylva, died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, in Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Revs. Pervie L. Stines and Larry Robinson officiated. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Fred, Jimmy and Johnny Nicholson, Charles Messer, Claude Mathis and Alvin Henson. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a daughter of the late W.M. and Sarah Davenport Nicholson. She was of the Baptist denomination and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by one sister, Hester Henson, and an infant brother, William McKinnley Nicholson. Surviving are three sisters, Mary Mathis, Bessie Belle Messer and Lizzie McCoy, all of Sylva; and four brothers, the Rev. Hardin Nicholson of Sylva, J.C. Nicholson of Webster, Lewis Roseavelt Nicholson of Lexington and Bill H. Nicholson Jr. of Sylva, with whom she made her home. Memorials may be made to the Crippled Children's Association.
Granville Mull Jr.Granville M. Mull Jr., 80, of Thomas Valley Road, Whittier, died Friday, Dec. 14, 2001, in Mission -St. Joseph's Health System after an extended illness.Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Rev. Hal Finney officiated. Burial was in Bumgarner Cemetery with military rites conducted by Steve Youngdeer American Legion Post 143. Pallbearers were Johnny Dills, Jimmy Mull, Ron Bliss, William Shelton, C.W. Ogle and Donald Brown. Honorary pallbearers were Cecil Clark, Roger Shelton, Robert Varner, Earl Williams, Kelly Bradley, Lloyd Mull, George Malpass, Hugh Potts, Henley Cope and members of the Sylva Police Department. A native of Haywood County, he had lived in Jackson County for the past 28 years. He retired from the Sylva Police Department. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theater and earning the Silver Star, European-Africa-Middle East Campaign Medal with three Bronze Stars and the Distinguished Unit Emblem with Oak Leaf Cluster, among other distinguished medals. He was also a member of the Ocona Masonic Lodge 427 for 42 years and was the past district deputy of the Tuckasegee Chapter of OES and Law Enforcement Officers Association. Son of the late Granville M. Sr. and Lila Morgan Mull, he was a member of Whittier United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by one sister, Margie Wilson; and one brother, Paul M. Mull. Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Wilma S. Mull; one son, Max T. Hyde Sr. of Gaffney, S.C.; three sisters, Hazel M. Dills, Anna B. Wyatt and Faye M. Case, all of Waynesville; and two grandchildren. Clarence McClureCecil Clarence McClure, 80, of Durham, died Wednesday, Dec.12, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center.A memorial service will be held by family members at a later date. He was born Jan.12, 1921, in Balsam to Raymond and Nettie Bryson McClure and was raised in Addie community. He attended high school in Sylva and worked in Portsmouth, Va., in the Navy yard building ships before he joined the U.S. Navy. During World War II, he served in the Pacific aboard a ship that serviced and supplied submarines. He married Arbutus Ward of Barkers Creek in 1947, and they moved to Durham. He graduated from the Industrial Training Institute in Chicago and returned to Durham, where he began his career in 1950 at DUMC. He was a supervisor in the refrigeration and air conditioning department until retiring in 1986. He was a member of Grace Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by one sister, Ruby McClure; and two brothers, Jack McClure and Glenn McClure. Surviving are his wife, Arbutus McClure; one daughter, Dee McClure of Greeley, Colo.; one sister, Betty Nowlin of Sylva; three brothers, Joe McClure and Roy McClure, both of Sylva, and Gene McClure of Asheville; and one granddaughter. Bertha MedfordBertha Weeks Medford, 89, of Bryson City's Deep Creek community, died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, in Swain County Hospital.Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19, in the chapel of Bill Moody Funeral Home. The Rev. Thomas "Tom" Harris officiated. Burial was in Swain Memorial Park. A native of Swain County, she was a daughter of the late Manuel and Mary Constant Weeks and the wife of the late J.W. Medford. She was a homemaker and formerly attended the Pilgram Holiness Church. She was preceded in death by one son, Charles Medford; and several brothers and sisters. Surviving are two sons, J. Adrian Medford of Bryson City and W. Gerald Medford of Maggie Valley; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous great-great-grandchildren. Divola NicholsonDivola Cogdill Nicholson, 76, of Pisgah Forest, died Friday, Dec. 14, 2001, at Transylvania Community Hospital.Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 17, at St. Timothy United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. The Rev. Shelly Webb officiated. Burial was in Pisgah Gardens. A native of Jackson County, she was a daughter of Charlie B. Cogdill of Sylva and the late Dollie Queen Cogdill. She was a member of St. Timothy United Methodist Church of Brevard. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Nicholson, who died in 1998. Surviving, in addition to her father, are two sons, Larry Nicholson of Easley, S.C., and Garry Nicholson of Judianapolis, Ind.; two brothers, Willard Cogdill and Lanny Cogdill, both of Sylva; three sisters, Clarine Norman, Dixie Crawford, and Joyce Davis, all of Sylva; and five grandchildren. Jessie CalhounJessie Bradley Calhoun, 89, of Asheville, formerly of Sylva, died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001, at Mission-St. Joseph Hospital after a period of declining health.Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Rev. Eddie Stillwell will officiate. Burial will be in Old Field Cemetery. A native of Jackson County, she was a charter member and oldest member of Calvary Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late Lewis Coleman and Martha Hall. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Calhoun, who died in 1940; and three brothers, William Gerson Bradley, J.D. Bradley and Allen Bradley. Surviving are one son, Robert Kenneth Calhoun of Asheville; one sister, Laura Mae Buchanan of Sylva; one brother, Robert Carl Bradley of Asheville; and one granddaughter. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21, at the funeral home.
Dorothy ShumnyDorothy Seago Shumny, 74, of Crymes Cove Road, Waynesville, died Friday, Dec. 14, 2001, at Haywood Medical Center.Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. The Rev. James K. Pressley officiated. Burial was at Fairview Memorial Gardens. A native of Jackson County, she spent most of her life in California before moving to Haywood County 12 years ago. She was a daughter of the late Royal and Rhoda Seago. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Earl Shumny and Charles Stanley; one sister, Mildred; and four brothers, Frank, Elsie, Robert Lee and Harold Seago. Surviving are one daughter, Linda Stanley-Burns of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; two sons, Charles Stanley of Aqua Dulee, Calif., and Wesley Carlisle of Martinsville, Canada; three brothers, Dean Seago of Pigeon Forge, Tenn., Glenn Seago of Santa Fe Springs, Calif., and Jesse Seago of Jacksonville; two sisters, Edith Trull of Waynesville and Shirley Pressley of Cullowhee; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Wayne WalkerWayne Wesley Walker, 99, of Bryson City's Shepherds Creek community, died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at Harris Regional Hospital.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, at Holly Springs Baptist Church, of which he was the oldest member. The Revs. Ray Fox, Mike Moore and Tom Harris officiated. Burial was in Holly Springs Cemetery 2. A native of Swain County, he was a son of the late William Pickins and Lucinda Watkins Walker. He was a logger. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Vivian Walker; one son, Wayne Nelson Walker; four sisters, Ida Johnson, Nora Woods, Lula Wiggins and Annie Rogers; and one brother, Willie Walker. Surviving are his wife of 70 years, Pearl Buchanan Walker; two daughters, Valaree Walker Hino of Lugolf, S.C., and Clarine Walker Woodward of Stafford, Va.; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. John KitchensJohn L. "Jack" Kitchens, 72, of Balsam, died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001.A mass will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sylva at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002. He was a stockbroker in Miami for more than 30 years before retiring to the mountains of North Carolina. A graduate of the University of Miami, he served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army and settled in Miami, where he served on the Orange Bowl Committee and was a life member of the Coral Reef Yacht Club. Surviving are four sons, John Jr. of Miami, Brian Kitchens of Charlotte, Kit Wickenden of Naples, Fla., and Jim Kitchens of Charlotte; one daughter, Colleen Kitchens of Buffalo, N.Y.; one sister, Jeani Pennekamp of Coral Gables, Fla.; and five grandchildren.
