Ellis AsheEllis Wade Ashe, 63, of Little Rock, Ark., died Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002, at Baptist Medical Center in Little Rock.Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 12, at Otter Creek Assembly of God Church. The Revs. Dale Green, Jim King and John Tracey officiated. Burial was at Rebstock Cemetery, Petit Jean Mountain. Pallbearers were Wade Ashe, Kirk Ashe, John Ashe, Steve Ashe, Clinton Stone, Clayton Stone, David Meek and Jerry Wear. He was born May 26, 1939, in Jackson County to the late Wade Ellis and Abbie Dockery Ashe. He was a landscaper, carpenter and cabinet maker. He was owner of Ashe Landscaping in Little Rock and a member of Faith Assembly of God Church. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Jenny Ashe. Surviving are his wife of 41 years, Floy Stone Ashe; four sons, Wade Ashe of Little Rock, Kirk Ashe of Conway, John Ashe of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Steve Ashe of Little Rock; two brothers, Willard Ashe of Franklin and Bill Ashe of Virginia; four sisters, Rosy Mae Haynes of Murphy and Ellen Gates, Nettie Rhinehart and Mary Dillard, all of Sylva; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. William BrysonWilliam Ray Bryson, 77 of Pisgah Highway, Candler, formerly of Jackson County, died Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, after an extended illness at The Laurels of Green Tree Nursing Facility.Services will be at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church. The Rev. Bobby Winebarger and Chaplain Butch Stillwell will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews. His family was to have received friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18, at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue in Asheville. The son of the late Milt and Ella Mae Watson Bryson, he was a member of Good News Baptist Chuch and was retired from BASF. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Aileen Collins Bryson; and his sister, Nannie Arrington. Surviving are his wife, Kathleen Holcombe Bryson; his daughter, Linda Odom; three grandchildren; and two sisters, Faye Parker of Sylva and Kessie Reese of Asheville. Guy George Jr.Guy George Jr., 60, of Cherokee, died Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, at his residence after a period of declining health.Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18, at Rock Springs Baptist Church. The Rev. Bobby Watts officiated. Burial was in Hicks Cemetery. A native of Swain County, he lived in Jackson County most of his life and was the son of the late Guy George Sr. and Sally T. George. He was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church and retired from the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians. Surviving are his wife, Bernadine H. George; two daughters, Denise George and Terri Jo George, both of Cherokee; five sisters, Eloise Manye, Lucinda McCoy, Roberta Walkingstick, Martha Swelling and Sally Ann Shehan, all of Cherokee; and three grandchildren. Betty FreemanBetty Jo Freeman, 72, of 201 Freeman Road, Waynesville, died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, at Britthaven of Franklin.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, at the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home. The Rev. Paul Carden officiated. Burial will be at Green Hill Cemetery at a later date. A native of Maggie Valley and a lifelong resident of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Floyd and Grace Rich Grant. She was employed by Dayco as an inspector and retired in 1970 after 21 years of service. She was a member of Hazelwood Baptist Church and a member of the Order of Eastern Star of Waynesville. She was preceded in death by two brothers, James and Jack Grant. Surviving are her husband of 52 years, William "Bill" T. Freeman; one daughter, Gwendolyn Nicholson of Sylva; two sons, William "Mike" Freeman of Murrells Inlet, S.C., and Timothy Grant Freeman of Waynesville; three sisters, Georgie Childress of Waynesville, Evelyn Green of Lake Junaluska and Willie Grace "Smokie" Jones of Canton; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild. The Revs. Denny Crowe, James Sneed and Tom Harris officiated. Burial was in Drama Cemetery. A native of Swain County, he was the son of the late Steve and Josephine Swayney Saunooke. He was a baseball player. He was preceded in death by one brother, Jesse Saunooke. Surviving are one son, Randall Issac Saunooke of Cherokee; two daughters, Stephanie Saunooke and Nakia Saunooke, both of Cherokee; three sisters, Annie Owens, Rudy Saunooke and Frances Queen, all of Cherokee; two brothers, John and Joe Saunooke of Cherokee; seven grandchildren. Joe BradleyGlenn Joe Bradley Sr., 71, of Cherokee's Big Y community, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at his residence after a period of declining health.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, in Macedonia Baptist Church. The Revs. Robert Christopher and James "Bo" Parris officiated. Burial followed in Bradley Family Cemetery. A native and lifelong resident of Cherokee, he was a member of Wrights Creek Baptist Church. He was an elected Tribal Council member for 10 years, for which he served as vice chairman for two years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean War. Son of the late Nick and Edith Hart Bradley, he was retired from the Bureau of Indian Affairs. He was preceded in death by John and Jarrett Bradley and Betty Crowe. Surviving are his wife, Sara Ann Powell Bradley; three sons, Glenn J. Bradley Jr., Judson Gregory Bradley and Charles "Chic" Crow; three daughters, Helena "Jody" Adams, Sharon Bradley McCoy and Susie Jones; a stepson, John Saloli Lossiah; four brothers, the Rev. James "Red" Bradley, Nick Bradley Jr., Hammond Bradley and Russell Bradley, all of Cherokee; one sister, Clara Jean Huskey of Cherokee; and five grandchildren. Charlotte WhittemoreCharlotte Sneed Whittemore, 85, of Cherokee's Birdtown community, died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, at Harris Regional Hospital.Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 16, at Cherokee United Methodist Church, of which she was a member. The Rev. Steven Phillippi officiated. Burial was in Drama Cemetery. A native of Swain County, she was the daughter of the late Osco and Arvazene Rogers Sneed. She was the founding editor of the Cherokee One Feather and a founding board member of the Yogi Crowe Scholarship Fund. She spent most of her life working for the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians. Surviving is one sister, Elba Kearney of Raleigh. Memorials may be made to the Yogi Crowe Scholarship Fund, P.O. The Rev. Verlin Bryson officiated. A native of Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late Bascom Bryson and Ollie Gunter Bryson. She was a member of the 1942 graduating class of McKee School in Cullowhee. She was employed by Ecusta Corp., Burlington Hosiery Mills, Skyland Textile and she retired from the Western Carolina University Book and Supply Store in Cullowhee. She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Julia Bumgarner; and an infant brother. Surviving are her husband of 44 years, Ransom Sterling Hensley; two daughters, Karen Hensley Monteith of Sylva and Gayle R. Boyd of Martin, Tenn.; one son, L.Z. Hensley of Mount Vernon, Ind.; three sisters, Virgie Watson of Eugene, Ore., Mary Jean Gibson of Candler and Reva Clark of Hazelwood; five brothers, Hubert Bryson of Brevard, Bart Bryson of Hendersonville, Darrell Bryson of Sylva, Verlin Bryson of Cullowhee and George Bryson of Murphy; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. James MullJames "Jim" Dale Mull Sr., 59, of Mitchell Road, Sylva, died unexpectedly Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Revs. Eddie Stillwell and Wayne Sorrells officiated. Military rites were conducted by the Navy and Waynesville VFW Post No. 5203, of which he was a member. A native of Jackson County, where he had lived most of his life, he was a 1962 graduate of Sylva-Webster High School. He attended Southwestern Community College and was a retired, disabled Navy veteran who served in Vietnam. He was a member of Buff Creek Baptist Church and was a son of the late Fred and Ethel Pannell Mull. He was preceded in death by a brother, Emil "Dick" Mull; and one sister, Elizabeth Monteith. His sister, Jackie Alexander, died the same day. Surviving are his wife of 35 years, Linda Ellen Tallent Mull; one daughter, Melanie Sather of Fayetteville; one son, Jamie Mull of Sylva; three sisters, Betty Cole and Judy Parris, both of Sylva, and Dorothy Pope of Matthews; two brothers, Joe Mull of Sylva and Fred Mull of Asheville; and one grandson, Chance Mull. The Rev.Dr. Frank Padgett officiated. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a former employee of Sylco Corp. and owned her own clothing store until she retired in 1985. She was a member of Cullowhee United Methodist Church. She was a daughter of the late Fred Allen Mull and Ethel Mae Pannell Mull. She preceded in death by one sister, Elizabeth Mull Monteith; and one brother, Emil "Dick" Mull. Her brother Jim Mull died the same day. Surviving are her husband of 25 years, Doyle Alexander; one son, William "Bill" Scott Mull of Tuckasegee; two brothers, Fred Mull of Fletcher and Joe Mull of Sylva; and three sisters, Dorothy Pope of Matthews and Betty Cole and Judy Parris, both of Sylva. Joshua PhillipsFuneral services for Joshua David Phillips, 22, of Glenville's Pine Creek community, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15, at Glenville Wesleyan Church. Burial was held at Glenville Wesleyan Church Cemetery.He was born in Bradenton, Fla., and graduated as class salutatorian from Blue Ridge School in 1998, where he also played soccer and baseball. After high school he attended Eastern Carolina University for a short time, returning home to the Glenville area. At the time of his death he was attending general contracting and drafting courses at Southwestern Community College. Both his parents were of the Welsh descent. Surviving are his father, Hal Phillips of Glenville; stepmother, Caroline Hatfields of Felicity, Ohio; two sisters, Jo Anna Mae Phillips of Glenville and Amy Elizabeth Phillips of Detroit; and one brother, Stephan Thomas Phillips of Livonia, Mich.
