Billie Adams
Billie Daves Adams, 85, of Ivy Hill Nursing Center in Brevard, formerly
of Cullowhee, died Friday, Dec. 12, 2003, at Ivy Hill Nursing Center
after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 15, at Speedwell
Methodist Church, of which she was a member. The Revs. Tina Evans and
Earl Holden officiated. Burial was in the Roger-Hooper Cemetery.
Grandsons served as pallbearers.
A native of Jackson County, she had lived in Brevard the past year.
Daughter of the late Mont and Zephyer Shelton Daves, she was a gardener,
canner and quilter.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Irvin Adams and Lester Adams;
one son, Jimmy Adams; one brother, Nathan Daves; and two sisters, Vivian
D. Parker and Lillie Smith.
Surviving are three daughters, Lib Sims and Gay Coggins, both of Pisgah
Forest, and Linda Bryson of Forest Park, Ga.; one son, Lee Porter of
Pisgah Forest; one sister, Edith Parris of Sylva; 10 grandchildren and
11 great-grandchildren.

T.C. Lewis

Troy "T.C." Lewis, 74, of Sylva, died Thursday, Dec. 11,
2003, at Mission Hospitals in Asheville after a period of declining
health.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 15, at the Sylva First
Baptist Church. The Revs. Dr. John Bunn, Ray McCall and Wayne Hill officiated.
Burial was at Fairview Memorial Gardens.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a graduate
of Webster High School and Western Carolina University, afterwards serving
in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict.
He was owner/operator of Lewis Oil for many years and formerly Lewis
Esso until 1969. He served as mayor of Sylva from 1977-90. In addition,
he has served as chairman of the Jackson County Commissioners, former
vice president of Jackson Savings Bank Board of Directors and was currently
the president of Jackson Savings Bank Board of Directors.
He was retired from the Sylva Volunteer Fire Department and was a member
of Webster Baptist Church, where he had served as treasurer for many
years. He was a son of the late Ernest Lewis.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one son, Mike
Lewis.
Surviving are his wife, Oberia Owen Lewis; his mother, Edna Davis Lewis
of Dillsboro; one son, Tim Lewis of Sylva; one brother, Duane Lewis
of Winston-Salem; one sister, Carolyn Buchanan of Dillsboro; and four
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Rance Huskins
Rance Vincent "Bill" Huskins, 83, of Marble died Friday,
Dec. 5, 2003, at his residence.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 8, in Mount Zion
Baptist Church. The Rev. Fred Lunsford officiated. Burial was in the
Huskins family cemetery. Pallbearers were Eddie, Brandon and Joseph
Huskins, Tony and Chris Dillard, and Clinton Messer. William Palmer
and Kenneth Higgins served as honorary pallbearers.
A native and lifelong resident of Cherokee County, he was a son of the
late James Robert and Artie Almond Huskins. He was a veteran of World
War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He was a farmer and had retired from
the N.C. Department of Transportation. He was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Mae Johnson Huskins; one daughter,
Kathy Huskins Piercy of Andrews; four sons, Warren L. Huskins and Larry
B. Huskins, both of Marble, Randle P. Huskins of Sylva, and Keith Huskins
of Andrews; three sisters, Flonnie Wilson of Marble, Pearl Morgan of
Tampa, Fla., and Opal Key of Marietta, Ga.; one brother, Raleigh Huskins
of Charlotte; 10 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren.

Madeline Smittle
Madeline "Petie" Trigg Smittle, 76, of Qualla Hills Road,
Whittier, died Friday, Dec. 12, 2003, at her residence after a period
of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14, at the Shepherd
of the Hills Lutheran Church. The Rev. Timothy Rall officiated. Burial
was at Fairview Memorial Gardens.
A long time resident of Henry County, Ga., she started, and for many
years operated, a plumbing supply business in McDonough, Ga.
Surviving are one son, Dr. David Trigg of Whittier; one brother, Wally
Peters of Herald, Calif.; and five grandchildren.

Shayla Rice
Shayla Nicole Rice, infant daughter of Thomas and Jennifer Rice of
Sylva, died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003.
Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, at the Church
of the Good Shepherd Cemetery in Cashiers. The Rev. Michael Hudson officiated.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her paternal grandparents,
Tim and Catherine Tanner of Sylva, and Charlie and Eva Adams of Williamston,
S.C.

Dean Keener
Dean Keener, infant son of Richard Dean and Revina Jean Sneed Keener
of Cherokee, was born and died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2003 at Mission Hospitals
in Asheville.
Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, at Sneed's
Holly Cemetery in Cherokee. The Rev. James "Bo" Parris officiated.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Thomas Keener.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his paternal grandmother,
Mary Keener; maternal grandparents, James and Hazel Sneed; one brother,
Jesse Sneed; and great grandfather, Ernest Sneed.

Albert Arnold
Albert Haywood Arnold, 89, of Sylva, died Friday, Dec. 12, 2003, at
Mountain Trace Nursing Center.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 15, at Crestwood
Memorial Cemetery in Gadsden, Ala.
Born in Paxton, Fla., he was the husband of the late Dressie Griffin
Arnold and son of the late Jesse and Fannie Lee Arnold. In World War
II he served in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps in the Philippines.
He retired from Rhodes Furniture stores, having served as manager of
local stores and district manager in Alabama and Florida. He and his
family lived in Mobile, Dothan and Gadsden, Ala., and for 35 years in
Pensacola, Fla.
He was active in church and community affairs, serving as Sunday school
director, church training director and chairman of the deacons of First
Baptist Church, Pensacola and later as chairman of the deacons in First
Baptist Church, Gadsden. On moving to Sylva in retirement, he attended
First United Methodist Church.
He was active in the Masonic Lodge, Kiwanis and Lions Club and volunteered
in numerous community activities, including mentoring children at risk,
tutoring and assisting in voter registration and polling. He was a master
dulcimer maker of more than 2,000 instruments.
Surviving are three daughters, Barbara Osment of Sylva, Cynthia Beckwith
of DeLeon Springs, Fla., and Deborah Fleming of Harpers Ferry, W.Va.;
two sisters, Betty Tyson of Jacksonville, Fla., and Jeanette Chambers
of Dothan, Ala.; one brother, Dewey Arnold of Ozark, Ala.; nine grandchildren;
and six great-grandchildren.

Albert Bradley
Albert Freeman Bradley, 80, of Cherokee's Yellowhill community, died
Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2003, at his residence.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Thursday) at Bradley
Family Cemetery on Bunches Creek.
A native of Cherokee, he was a son of the late Amos and Sarah Powell
Bradley. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, having served in World War
II and the Korean War.
Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Hilde Bradley; one daughter, Teresa
McCoy of Cherokee; two sons, Donald Bradley of Danville, Va., and Jimmy
Bradley of Cherokee; one brother, Jack Bradley of Cherokee; one sister,
Amy Thompson of Cherokee; and six grandchildren.
The family was to have received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday,
Dec. 17, at Crisp Funeral Home, Bryson City.

Bill Scott
William "Bill" Scott Jr., 86, of Sylva, died Tuesday, Dec.
16, 2003, after a period of declining health.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, at the First
United Methodist Church of Sylva. Dr. Wanda Kidd and the Rev. Paul Christy
will officiate. The family will receive friends immediately following
the service at the church. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m.
Sunday, Dec. 21, at Union Chapel Cemetery in Eatonton, Ga.
A native of Putnam, Ga., he was a veteran of World War II, having served
in the U.S. Navy as a naval aviator for five years. He earned his undergraduate
degree from Young Harris College, law degree from Atlanta Law School,
business degree from the University of Georgia, master of science degree
from the University of Tennessee and master of law degree from the University
of Mississippi.
He served as attorney for Western Carolina University from 1970 until
his retirement in 1984. Appointed as the university's first legal counsel,
he had joined the faculty in the School of Business in 1966 and was
at one time head of the department of business law and interim dean
of the business school.
He had been a member of the board of directors for Northwestern Bank
in Sylva, had served as assistant secretary and general counsel of Miss
Georgia Dairies, member of the board of directors and general counsel
for Evans Implement Co., vice president and general counsel of Southeastern
Federal Savings and Loan Association of Lithonia, Ga., and general counsel
of SECO Inc.
Son of the late William Ewing and Irene Burton Scott, he was a member
of the Masons Yaarib Shrine Temple in Atlanta. He was nominated as an
Outstanding Educator of America in 1973, Who's Who in North Carolina,
1973; Man of the Year by WCU's Student Government Association in 1972;
and Boss of the Year in 1978.
His paper on "Ethical Codes in Business" was published in
1969 in the Eastern Business Teacher's Yearbook.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Patsy Scott.
Surviving are one son, Bill Scott of Franklin; one daughter, Patsy Prickett
of Asheville; one sister, Betty Allen of Savannah, Ga.; and three grandchildren.

Margaret Hubbard
Margaret Atkins Hubbard, 94, of East Main Street, Wilkesboro, died
Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, at Wilkes Regional Center in North Wilkesboro.
Graveside services were held Wednesday, Dec. 17, at 2 p.m. at Moravian
Falls Cemetery. The Rev. Christopher Fitzgerald officiated.
She was born in Wilkes County on Feb. 19, 1909, to James Callaway and
Margaret Wright Hubbard. She was a member of Wilkesboro United Methodist
Church. She attended the National School of Fine Arts in Washington,
D.C. She graduated from St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing in 1935
and was a nursing supervisor in Richmond, Va. During World War II, she
trained cadet nurses for the U.S. Army. She worked at Wilkes General
Hospital from 1954 to 1974.
Surviving are several nephews and nieces, including Mary P. Iobst of
Cullowhee.
