Samuel JudySamuel Benjamin Judy, M.D., of 189 Trampus Trail, Franklin, died unexpectedly Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at his residence.A celebration of his life was held at the Waynesville Country Club Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001. A memorial service will be held at Clarksville Baptist Church in Clarksville, Va., at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15. Born Dec. 26, 1921, in Parkersburg, W.Va., he was the son of the late William and Jessie Wamsley Judy. He graduated from Virginia Tech in 1943, where he was a football player. In 1992 he was elected to the All Century football team at Virginia Tech. |

He chose medical school over a professional football career after having been drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles. He became the first scholarship athlete at Virginia Tech to attend medical school. He graduated from the Medical College of Virginia in 1948 where he specialized in family medicine; he did his residency at Stuart Circle Hospital in Richmond, Va.
He began his medical practice in Clarksville, Va., in 1949 and remained for 43 years before moving to Haywood County in 1992. He worked with Hazelwood Family Practice until 1999, when he became associated with WestCare Family Medicine in Sylva and Franklin. He attained many honors. He was a diplomate and life member of American Academy of Family Practice, life member of Virginia Medical Society, and member of the N.C. Medical Society. He was named Clarksville, Va., Citizen of the Year In 1975. He also served as a deacon of Clarksville Baptist Church, president of Kinderton County Club, and president of the Clarksville Lion's Club. Surviving are his wife, Mildred McWhorter Judy; one daughter, Janelle Langford of Clarksville, Va.; three sons, Billy Judy of Gibsonville, Jess Judy of Nashville, Tenn., and Bubba Judy of Greensboro; one stepson, Don Lamb of Soddy-Daisy, Tenn.; one sister, Edna Jane Miller of Loudon, Tenn.; six grandchildren; one step-grandson; and two stepgreat-grandchildren. Gale BrantnerGale Irving Brantner, 69, of Whittier's Qualla community, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, at his residence.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, at Shoal Creek Baptist Church, where elders Charles Andrew Brantner and Charles W. Brantner officiated. Burial was in Thomas Cemetery. A native of Rockford, Mich., he had lived in Jackson County for the past seven years. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War, where he was a flight simulator. He worked as an electronics engineer with Lear Siegler in Grand Rapids, Mich. He was a missionary for the Church of Christ and was pastor of Calico Congregation Church of Christ in Cherokee's Big Cove community. He was preceded in death by his father, George Brantner, and his brother, Danny Brantner. Surviving are his mother, Sarah Brantner of Warrensburg, Mo.; his wife, Alice Herring Hughes Brantner; four daughters, Lynne Blakeslee and LuAnne Mueller, both of Rockford, Mich., Diane Raymond of Bruce Crossing, Mich., and Nancy Rosenzweig of Rockford, Mich.; two sons, Donald and Douglas Brantner of Ravenna, Mich.; one stepdaughter, Deborah Smith of Whittier; two stepsons, David Hughes of Whittier and Bryan Hughes of West Palm Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Jeanette Cunningham and Jeanece Stephens, both of Warrensburg, Mo.; two brothers, Charles Brantner of Lone Jack, Mo., and Richard Brantner of Eagle, Mich.; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren. Painter, 64, of Sylva's Locust Creek community, died unexpectedly Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, after a brief illness.Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 10, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Revs. Mike Dellinger and Dillard Moore officiated. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Danny Stamey, David Potts, Walker Deitz, Billy Herren, Bob Middleton and Darrell Bradley. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was formerly an operator with Continental Telephone. She was a daughter of the late David P. and Dorothy Wild Cagle. She was a member of Sylva's First Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by one sister, Mattie Cagle. Surviving are her husband of 46 years, William Carl "Red" Painter; one daughter, Gail Fugate of Cashiers; one son, David Painter Sr. of Sylva; one sister, Joanne Cagle of Sylva; and four grandchildren. Lona HaskettLona McKee Haskett, 68, of Buchanan Loop, Webster, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001, at Harris Regional Hospital.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, at Lovedale Baptist Church, of which she was a member. The Revs. J.D. Grant, Eddie Stillwell and Mike Farmer officiated. Burial was in Webster Cemetery. Pallbearers were Larry Haskett, Roger Bartlett, Lee Ewart, Dylan Woodbery, Hoyt Robinson and Kirk Saunooke. She was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson County and member of the Eastern Star. She was a daughter of the late Fred M. and Evelyn Green McKee. She was preceded in death by one son, Fred Andrew Haskett. Surviving are her husband of 48 years, R.L. Haskett; two daughters, Susan Hester of Asheville and Kelly Edmundson of Clarksville, Va.; two sons, Robert Lee Haskett Jr. of Asheville and Keith Haskett of Winston-Salem; one sister, Pat Tilley of Waynesville; and three grandchildren. Robert LambertRobert Arthur Lambert, 53, of Cherokee's Birdtown community, died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, in Tsali Care Center.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, at Bethabara Baptist Church, of which he was a member. The Rev. Ricky Stepp officiated. Burial was in Birdtown Cemetery, with military graveside rites conducted by Steve Youngdeer American Legion Post. A native of Swain County, he was a son of Ethel Murphy Lambert of Cherokee and the late Willard Lambert. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War and a building contractor. He was preceded in death by a sister, Shirlene "Biddie" McCoy. Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife of 27 years, Lana Haney Lambert; three daughters, Tavish Lambert, Keahana T. Lambert and Sarella C. Lambert, all of Cherokee; one son, Justin Reeves Lambert of the home; three brothers, Willard Lambert Jr. of Madisonville, Tenn., and Walter "Bud" Lambert and Willard H. Max Cochran officiated. Burial was at Thomas Chapel Cemetery. A native of Swain County, she was a teacher and licensed practical nurse. She was a daughter of the late Haston and Aletha Jane Webb Springer. Surviving are two brothers, Clyde Springer of Sylva and Freeman Springer of Whittier, and one sister, Agnes Stillwell of Waynesville. Harold MonteithHarold "Red" Monteith, 75, of Washington, died Nov. 29, 2001, after an extended illness.A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, Dec. 29, at his home, 304 Scotland Drive, Camano Island, Wash. A native of Bushnell in Swain County, he was a son of Gordon and Martha Monteith. At 17, he volunteered for military service in the U.S. Army. During World War II, he served with the American Division in the Philippines, and later with an Airborne Division in Japan. When the war ended he was honorably discharged and returned to Sylva, where he was briefly employed before going to Darrington, Wash., where he was employed by Sears Roebuck. He retired in 1989 after 38 years with Sears. He married Shirley Hammer in 1952, and they moved to Everett, Wash., where they raised their three daughters. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are three daughters, Patti Greenslade, Holly Jones and Susan Monteith, all of Washington; three sisters, Willie Stanberry of Boone, and Inez Smith and Jo Moon, both of Sylva; one brother, Roger Monteith of Brevard; and one grandson.
Margaret PenlandMargaret Elizabeth Allen Penland, 66, of 10 Aspen Hill Court, Eastover, S.C., formerly of Asheville, died Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia, S.C.Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11, at Ashelawn Gardens of Memory. The Rev. Boyce M. Owenby officiated. A native of Jackson County, she moved to Asheville in 1990 where she was employed as a buyer with Trinity Industries until her retirement in 2000, at which time she moved to Eastover, S.C. She was the daughter of the late Jan Douglas and Lenora Watson Allen and was the wife of William Carroll Penland, who died in August 1987. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Edwin Allen and Raymond Allen. Surviving are one daughter, Valerie J. Penland of Asheville; one son, Douglas C. Jessie WebbJessie Mae Beck Webb, 84, of Gaston County, died Dec. 3, 2001, at Alexandra Place in Gastonia after a long period of declining health.Funeral services were held Thursday, Dec. 6, at Dallas Church of God. Burial was in Gaston Memorial Park in Gastonia. Daughter of the late John C. and Margaret Buchanan Beck, she was a native of Jackson County and had lived in the Cramerton area for almost fifty years. She was preceded in death by one son, Harold Webb; and two brothers Gene Beck and Clarence Beck. Surviving are her husband, William George Webb; four sons, William George "Bud" Webb Jr. of Gastonia, Billy Webb of Belmont and Ronald Webb and Jeff Webb, both of Cramerton; three daughters, Rachel Baker of Belmont, Linda Hendrix of Cramerton and Sylvia Zeigler of Stanley; two brothers, Sam F. Beck and Johnny R. Beck, both of Sylva; one sister, Jeston Frady of Sylva, seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Ree PrewittRee Clanton Prewitt, 77, of Cherokee, formerly of Cleveland, Miss., died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at her home.Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, at Ray Funeral Home. Burial was in New Cleveland Cemetery. She was born on May 14, 1924, in Grenada, Miss., to Vardaman Fox and Georgia Lillian Clanton. She married Dois E. Prewitt and they lived in Cleveland, where she was active in the public school system and helped organize a Brownie troop. She was a member of the Church of Christ, where she also taught Sunday school. She and her husband moved to the Great Smoky Mountains in 1970 and built a campground near Cherokee. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dois E. Prewitt, who died Oct. 28, 2001; and her parents. Surviving are two daughters, Deborah Braswell and Felecia Prewitt, both of Cherokee; two sisters, Ruby Stieger of Philadelphia and Rachael Hobart of Avon, Miss.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Ray HooperRay Lowell Hooper, 87, of Croasdaile Village, Durham, died Wednesday, Dec. 5, after a brief illness.A memorial service will be held Sunday, Dec. 16, at 3 p.m. in the auditorium of Croasdaile Village, followed by a memorial service at First United Methodist Church of Brevard at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 26. Born in Jackson County's Caney Fork community on March 24, 1914, he was the last surviving of Aaron and Mary Jane Zachary Hooper's seven children. He was educated at Western Carolina University and N.C. State University in the midst of the Great Depression. Upon graduation in 1939, he worked as a chemist for the Ecusta Paper Corp. in Brevard, a position he held for more than 30 years. He also worked in the chemistry department of Brevard College and served as a maintenance supervisor for the Brevard Music Center and Transylvania County. In May 1941, he married Ruby Inez Glazener, his wife of more than 60 years. They made their home in Brevard until 1996, when they moved to the Methodist Retirement Community in Durham, then later to Croasdaile Village. He was a long-term active member of Brevard's First United Methodist Church, where he served on the building committee. Throughout his working years and in his retirement, he spent his spare time at the plane and the lathe, building furniture, decorative wood pieces and toys for friends and family. In the last three years he maintained a small workshop in a corner of the maintenance shop at Croasdaile Village. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two daughters, Marrianna Osolin-Putnam and Marla Hooper Dunham, both of Chapel Hill; and three grandchildren. Harrison ThomasHarrison Lee "Pat" Thomas, 67, of Bryson City, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at his residence.Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, in the chapel of Bill Moody Funeral Home in Bryson City. The Rev. O.T. Tomes officiated. Burial was at Swain Memorial Park. A native of Swain County, he was a son of the late Albert and Grace Thomas. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean War. He was a Sunday school teacher, deacon and member of Morning Star Baptist Church.
