Obituary Information

The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Danny Barnes

William Daniel "Danny" Barnes, 70, of Fisher Creek Road, Sylva, died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003, at Harris Regional Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. The Rev. Dr. John Bunn officiated. Burial was at Dills Cemetery.

A native of Jackson County, he was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was retired from the N.C. Department of Agriculture as a gas and oil inspector, had been a disc jockey for WMSJ radio and had served as past chairman for Jackson County Board of Elections. He was the son of the late Eula Louise Barnes.

Surviving are his wife, Betty Fisher Barnes; one son, Todd Barnes of Sylva; one daughter, Angie Noland of Balsam; one brother, Jim Barnes of Brevard; and two grandchildren.

Bill Plaster

Bill Plaster, 60, of Painter Street, Sylva, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home will announce arrangements.

Thomas Reid

Thomas L. Reid, 78, of Cherokee, died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, at the Thomas McAfee Funeral Home Chapel in Greenville, S.C. The Rev. Sandra Davis officiated. Burial was at Greenville Memorial Park.

A native of Pickens, S.C., he was retired from J.P. Stevens Mills as a machine mechanic and had been a resident of Cherokee since 1995. He was a son of the late Thomas Furman and Etta Vickery Reid.

He was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.

Surviving are his wife, Christine Foster Reid; two sons, Randy Faus of Whittier and Thomas Michael Reid of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two daughters, Vickie Murphy of Cherokee and Rhonda Ramsey of Aiken, S.C.; three brothers, James Reid, David Reid and Roy Reid, all of Greenville, S.C.; three sisters, Lela Mae Kellette and Lou King, both of Piedmont, S.C., and Kathleen LaBoone of Greenville, S.C.; five grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

Moody Funeral Home, Sylva, was in charge of local arrangements.

Leona Kish

Leona Kish, 89, of Monroe Buchanan Road, Sylva, died Monday, Nov. 24, 2003, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 28, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. The Rev. Larry Bryson officiated. Burial was at the Woody Cemetery in Bryson City.

A native of Swain County, she was the former owner of Dixie Nursery in Farm Park, Fla., and had retired to Dillsboro in 1987. She was a daughter of the late Walker Woody and Mary Shuler Woody.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alex Charles Kish, who died in 2001; six brothers; and six sisters.

Surviving are one son, Stephen A. Kish of Tallahassee, Fla.; one brother, Wayne Woody of Durham; and one sister, Gaynell Woody of Sylva.

Ira Nations

Ira Nations, 87, of Nations Creek Road, Whittier, died Monday, Nov. 24, 2003, at Skyland Care Center after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 26, at Wilmot Baptist Church, of which he was a member and deacon. The Revs. Johnny Ray Davis and Sherrill Ammons officiated. Burial was in Nations Creek Cemetery. Pallbearers were Gene Jones, Tim, Darrell, Kenny and Jimmy Nations and Greg Jamison.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, a retired logger and son of the late Dock and Annie Wyatt Nations.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.

Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Betty Brooks Nations; three sons, the Rev. Larry Nations and Mike Nations, both of Whittier, and the Rev. Johnny Nations, of Sevierville, Tenn.; two sisters, Gladys Sutton of Dillsboro and Olga Barker of Sylva; one brother, Ellis Nations of Darrington, Wash.; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Katie Swayney

Katie Calhoun Swayney, 70, of Cherokee's Big Cove community, died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003, at her residence.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, at David Swayney Cemetery on Big Cove Road.

The Rev. Charles Ray Ball officiated.

A native of Swain County, she was a daughter of the late Lawyer and Nannie Driver Calhoun. She was employed by the Oconaluftee Indian Village for several years and was a member of Straight Fork Baptist Church. She was the wife of the late David W. Swayney Sr.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Sequoyah Driver; and one sister, Marion Calhoun Mathis Bullard.

Surviving are four daughters, Kathy Wolfe, Brenda Sluder and Clara Driver, all of Cherokee, and Shirley Cloer of Bryson City; two sons, David W. Swayney Jr. and O.D. Swayney, both of Cherokee; one brother, Watty Driver Sr. of Gallatin, Tenn.; 17 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Crisp Funeral Home in Bryson City was in charge of arrangements.

Nancy Gibson

Nancy Crawford Gibson, 62, of Franklin, died Monday, Nov. 24, 2003, at her residence.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 27, in the chapel of Macon Funeral Home. The Revs. Alton Dendy, Bill Wooten and Terry Jenkins officiated. Burial was in Rush Cemetery. Pallbearers were Ronnie Cogdill, Bob Cogdill, Gary Cogdill, Roger Cogdill, Pritch Chastain and Verlon Stewart.

Born in Jackson County, she was a daughter of the late Avery Crawford and Iceie Norman Crawford. She was a member of Buff Creek Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

Surviving are her husband of 38 years, Doyle Gibson; and one sister, Annie Cogdill of Sylva.

Bob Estes

Robert Lee "Bob" Estes, 65, of Macon, Ga., died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2003, at his home.

Graveside services were held Saturday, Nov. 29, at Riverside Cemetery in Macon.

A native of Whittier, he was a veteran of the U.S. Army and the U.S. Army Reserve. He was a barber and owned Tattnall Square Dry Cleaners.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam W. and Birdie B. Estes.

Surviving are his wife, Judy Estes; two sons, Richard Dale Estes of Davis, Calif., and Mark Estes of Macon; four brothers, Paul Estes and Troy Estes, both of Tennessee, Carl Ray Estes of South Carolina, and J.D. Estes of Whittier; four sisters, Peggy Chambers of Georgia, Agnes Hawkins of Whittier, Margie Douthit of Bryson City and Dorothy Davis of Dillard, Ga.; and three grandchildren.
