Rev. Jimmy Ashe |
The Rev. Jimmy Dale Ashe, 50, of Mt. Zion Church Road, Sylva, died unexpectedly Saturday, Nov. 25, at Haywood Regional Medical Center.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29, at Speedwell Baptist Church. The Rev. Sherrill Ammons officiated. Burial was at Hooper Cemetery, Speedwell. Pallbearers were Carol Blanton, Carl Scott, Daniel Fiskeux, John Locust, Ray Pressley, Toby Painter, Steve Wilson and Joe Henry Barnes. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a son of the late James Oscar Ashe, who died in 1982, and Bertha Morrison Ashe, who died in 1966. He was a mail courier clerk with Southwestern Community College and a member of Heady Mountain Baptist Church. He was the lead singer with the Carolina Crossmen and formerly with the Happy Melody Quartet and the Revelation Quartet. |

He was preceded in death by one son, Michael Adrian Ashe; and one sister, Kathryn Deitz.
Surviving are his wife of 30 years, Barbara Greene Ashe; two daughters, April Dawn Ashe and Erica LeAnn Ashe Bullock, both of Jacksonville; one son, Joshua Brandon Ashe of the home; four sisters, Violet Maye Connor of Landrum, S.C., and Margaret Jane Ashe, Hazel Ashe and Barbara Mills, all of Cullowhee; three brothers, Milas Newton Ashe of Moncks Corner, S.C., Charles Lee Ashe of Sylva and Johnny Coleman Ashe of Cullowhee; and two granddaughters.

Myra KerrMyra Holden Kerr, 53, of Glenwood Place, Bristol, Conn., died Monday, Nov. 20, at Hartford Hospital.A memorial service was held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29, at Barnes Memorial Chapel at West Cemetery. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Born in Cincinnati, she was a daughter of the late Mark M. and Pauline Tice Kerr. She received a bachelor's degree in nursing from Emory University in Atlanta and a master's degree in nursing from Boston University. She has resided in Bristol, Conn., for 30 years and was the director of quality assurance for Connecticut Community Care Inc. for the past 24 years. She was a member of the Connecticut Nurses Association, Connecticut League for Nursing, served on the professional advisory board for the McLean Home in Simsbury and served as a captain in the Army Nurse Corps. Bill Adams officiated. A native of Swain County, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Odell Monteith. He was director of the solid waste department for the city of Rome, Ga., for 21 years, retiring in 1989. He was a member of East View Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Mull Monteith, who died in 1989; one sister; and one brother. Surviving are two sons, Ronald Monteith of Armuchee, Ga., and David Monteith of Rome, Ga.; one daughter, Carol M. Perry of Coosa, Ga.; seven sisters, Evelyn Gunter, Eunice Pittman, Eva Bell Fisher and Ella Mae Fisher, all of Sylva, Edna O'Diear of Whittier, Eileen Ollis of Bryson City and Estalee Shuler of Shannon, Ga.; one brother, Elmer Monteith of Hampton, Va.; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. The Rev. Walter Middleton officiated. Military graveside rites were performed at Fairview Memorial Gardens. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a son of the late Charlie and Lula Cabe Brooks. He was preceded in death by one brother, Issac Brooks; and four sisters, Hazel Middleton, Beatrice Brooks, Jessie Gibson and Bertha Brooks. Surviving are two sons, Doug Brooks of Waynesville and Roger Brooks of Sylva; one stepson, Albert Jones of Sylva; two brothers, John Brooks of Virginia and Charlie C. Dr. Alvin LindgrenDr. Alvin James Lindgren, 83, died Friday, Nov. 10, in Sylva.A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 15, at First United Methodist Church in Sylva. Born in Canton, Kan., he graduated with distinction from McPherson College in Kansas and Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Ill. He then earned his doctorate at Duke University and completed additional training at the Menninger School of Psychiatry and the UCLA School of Business Management and Consulting. For 17 years he served as a United Methodist minister in Manawa, Green Bay, Oshkosh and Watertown, Wisc. In 1975, he joined the faculty at Garrett, his alma mater, where he taught and supervised field work of ministerial students for 22 years. He also taught business management at Northwestern University. He was author of three books and numerous articles in church-related publications. He and his wife also wrote a book of stories about his childhood in Canton, Kan. In 1979, he and his wife retired to Florida, recently moving from Jacksonville, Fla., to Sylva. Surviving is his wife of 55 years, Alma Dorothy Lindgren of Sylva; three daughters, Patricia Anne Kresser, Judith Marie Carlson and Dianne Joy Lindgren; two sons, James Paul Lindgren and John Charles Lindgren; one sister, Alice Mae Jones; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. The military funeral was held Friday, Nov. 17, in the chapel at Black Mountain Veterans Cemetery, where she was buried.A native of Cullowhee, she graduated from Cullowhee High School in 1937 and attended Western Carolina Teacher's College. A veteran of World War II, she served in the postal inspection battalion. She worked as a nurse until her retirement. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rose and Reuben Garrett; two sisters, Sue Anthony and Charmie Ward; and her brother, Jack Garrett. Surviving are one sister, Jean Wickman of Whittier; one son, Michael Garrett; and one grandson. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. A mechanic, he retired from Franklin Machine Shop and was formerly employed by Kirk-Davis Chevrolet of Sylva. He was a member of Lovedale Baptist Church. He was a son of the late Walter and Betha Hall Mason and husband of the late Ruth Sumner Mason. Surviving are one son, Dick Mason of Eureka, Mont.; one daughter, Joyce Roberts of Tampa, Fla.; one brother, Harry Mason of Sylva; one sister, Lucille Worley of Asheville; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
