Ray ShulerRay Allen "Bud" Shuler, 65, of Bryson City's Franklin Grove community, died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, at Harris Regional Hospital.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 24, at Mount Carmel Baptist Church. Pastor Brad Burns and the Revs.Tom Harris and Jim Page officiated. Burial was in Swain Memorial Park. Pallbearers were Mike Shuler, Steve Shuler, James Shuler, Rock Ledford, Allen Langston, Arron Langston, Rick Earls, Ronnie Barker, Roger Battle and Bobby Robinson. A native of Cherokee County, he had lived most of his life in Swain County and was the owner and operator of Shuler Produce. He was a son of the late Clint and Leona Wright Shuler. He was preceded in death by one brother, Charles "Chuck" Shuler. Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Barbara Fortner Shuler; one son, Michael Shuler of Durham; one daughter, Misty Shuler of Bryson City; one brother, Joe Benny Shuler of Bryson City; four sisters, Evelyn Smith and Mary Ann Green, both of Franklin, Doris Turner of Whittier and Sue Ford of Orlando, Fla. Bill Moody Funeral Home in Bryson City assisted the family with arrangements.
Patrick HuttonPatrick Edward Hutton, 83, of 101 Water St., Bryson City, died Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002, in a Swain County health care facility.Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26, in the chapel of Crisp Funeral Home. The Revs. Tim Howard, Jim Frady and Arvil Nations officiated. Burial was in Swain Memorial Park. A native of New York and a longtime resident of Nebraska, he had traveled to almost all 50 states before moving to Bryson City 30 years ago. He was a member of Bryson City Church of God. Surviving are his wife of 21 years, Shirley Rich Hutton; one stepdaughter, Rita Faye Holloway of Atlanta; two stepsons, Freddie Allen Rich of Cashiers and Bobby Ray Rich of Hendersonville; and three stepgrandsons.
Clyde HensleyClyde Hensley, 90, of Macktown Road, Sylva, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2002, in Harris Regional Hospital after a brief illness.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, at Locust Field Baptist Church, of which he was a member. The Rev. Charles Carnes officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were grandsons. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a farmer and son of the late John Sevier and Hester Sutton Hensley. He was preceded in death by one great-great-granddaughter. Surviving are six daughters, Betty Ann Greene, Lucille Painter, Frankie Parris, Mary Darcus Barnes, all of Sylva, Birdell Bennett of Tampa, Fla., and Lina Jean Hall of Amherst, Va.; three sons, Robert Hayes Hensley and Roger Dale Hensley, both of Sylva, and Jerry Rondal Hensley of Mountain Home; 20 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Wilma MullWilma "Willie" S. Mull, 84, of Thomas Valley Road, Whittier, died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, in Mountain Trace Nursing Center after an extended illness.Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Rev. Hal Finney officiated. Burial was in Bumgarner Cemetery. Pallbearers were Ron Bliss, Don Brown, Johnny Dills, Roger Shelton, William R. Shelton and C.W. Ogle. Honorary pallbearer was J. Robert Varner. A native of Jackson County, she was a homemaker and formerly employed with Sears Roebuck and Co. She was a member of Whittier United Methodist Church and past officer of the Order of the Eastern Star in Bryson City. She was the daughter of the late H. Grady and Vera A. Saunders. She was preceded in death by her husband, Granville Mull Jr., who died in 2001. Surviving are one son, Max Thomas Hyde Sr. of Gaffney, S.C.; and two grandsons. Sallie HicksSallie Queen Hicks, 66, of Cherokee, died Monday, Nov. 18, 2002, at her residence.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, at Cherokee United Methodist Church. The Rev. Steve Phillippi officiated. Burial was in Bradley Family Cemetery. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a nurse and retired from Cherokee Indian Hospital. She was a daughter of the late John and Lucinda Bradley Queen. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Carol Wahneen Queen. Surviving are one son, Dale Rickman of Cherokee; one brother, John Queen Jr. of Chattanooga, Tenn.; two sisters, Jean Nickerson of Huntsville, Ala., and Mary Lou Hornbuckle of Cherokee; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Thomas ShulerThomas F. Shuler, 64, of Sylva's Cope Creek community, died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, at his residence after a brief illness.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 24, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Revs. Earl Holden and Dennis Burrell officiated. Burial was in New Hope Cemetery. Pallbearers were Shane Melton, Dustin Melton, Brandon Wilson, Craig Baker, Mike Hoyle and Heath Jones. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he worked at Dayco and T&S Hardwood until his health failed. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church and a son of Vinnie Hoyle Shuler of Sylva and the late Fred Joseph Shuler. He was preceded in death by one son, Tommy Shuler. Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife of 46 years, Rebecca Ann Ledford Shuler; two daughters, Melissa Shuler and Teresa S. Melton, both of Sylva; one son, David Shuler of Sylva; three sisters, Alean S. Cloer of Washington, Martha Jean Ensley of Indiana and Patsy Barker of Sylva; two brothers, Donald Shuler and Daniel Shuler, both of Sylva; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
