Fred Hoyle
Fred Hoyle, 92, of Lovedale Road, Sylva, died Friday, Nov. 21, 2003,
in Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, at Melton-Riddle
Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Steve Webb and Brian Bishop officiated.
Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens with military rites conducted
by the Sylva American Legion Post 104 and the Franklin American Legion
Post 108. Pallbearers were Tim Watson, Robbie Watson, J.R. Hoyle, Jack
Hoyle, Sam Hoyle and Clarence Hubble.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he worked in building
construction. Son of the late Joe and Martha Mills Hoyle, he was a member
of Unity Baptist Church and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
He was preceded in death by one son, Gene Hoyle; and three sisters and
three brothers.
Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Pearlie Melton Hoyle; three daughters,
Barbara Cabe, Martha Russell and Gladys Bishop, all of Sylva; one son,
Talmadge Hoyle of Sylva; one brother, Lloyd Hoyle of Cullowhee; six
grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; and one stepgranddaughter.

Frank Kirkland
Frank Dee Kirkland of Sylva died Friday, Nov. 21, 2003.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, in the chapel
of Bryant Funeral Home. Burial followed in Black Mountain Baptist Church
Cemetery.

Betty Waters
Betty Gentry Waters, 73, of Thompson Drive, Hudson, died Monday, Nov.
17, 2003, at Catawba Valley Medical Center.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, at Hudson
United Methodist Church. The Revs. Dr. Timothy Brittain and Tim Waters
officiated. Burial followed at Fairview Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers
were Robert L. Waters Jr., Daniel Waters, Randy Johnson, Samuel Johnson,
Eddie Waters and Neal Baker.
Honorary pallbearers were Norman Schoer, Michael Waters, James Waters
Jr., Carl Wagner, Cyrus Rowe and Pat Rowe.
She was born May 29, 1930, in Madison County to the late John R. and
Lola Wells Gentry. She was employed by H&R Block of Lenoir for 18
years and was a member of Hudson United Methodist Church. She was a
member of the United Methodist Church Council, conference delegate to
the Annual Conference of Western North Carolina United Methodist Church,
member of Hudson Garden Club, in which she served as president, and
member of the Hudson Child Development Center Board.
A graduate of Western Carolina University, she taught school in Western
North Carolina, including Glenville, and was a member of the N.C. Retired
Teachers Association, in which she served six terms as treasurer.
Surviving are her husband of 54 years, Charles "Charlie" E.
Waters; and two sisters, Ida Bryson of Dobson and Sue Thomas Baker of
Greeneville, Tenn.

Eva Estes
Eva Geneva Hall Estes, 75, of Sutton Branch Road, Sylva, died Thursday,
Nov. 20, 2003, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining
health.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, at Old Savannah
Baptist Church. The Revs. David Souderes and Clifford Parker officiated.
Burial was in Old Savannah Cemetery. Grandsons served as pallbearers.
She was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, member of
Old Savannah Baptist Church and worked at Buster Brown and Sylco. She
was a daughter of the late Ebb and Birdie Buchanan Hall.
She was preceded in death by two brothers.
Surviving are her husband of 57 years, John C. Estes; five daughters,
Brenda Moore, Elaine Estes, Loueva Stewman, and Renee Moore, all of
Sylva, and Kathy Buchanan of Belews Creek; one sister, Gladys Estes
of Fletcher; one brother, Weldon Hall of Sylva; nine grandchildren and
10 great-grandchildren.

Lizzie Deitz
Lizzie Deitz, 86, of Sylva's East Fork community, died Wednesday, Nov.
19, 2003, in Skyland Care Center after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, at Melton-Riddle
Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Ben Cabe officiated. Burial was in East
Fork Cemetery.
She was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson County and member
of Deitz Memorial Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late Sherman
and Laura Frady Deitz.
She was preceded in death by two infant siblings; two brothers; and
two sisters.
Surviving is her sister, Ada Carver of Sylva.

Geneva Kirchberg
Geneva Tate Kirchberg, 90, of Stallings, formerly of Sylva, died Monday,
Nov. 17, 2003, at Charlotte Presbyterian Hospital.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, at Woodland Church
of Christ, Sylva. Willard Cox officiated.
Born April 16, 1913, in Chattanooga, Tenn., she moved to Jackson County
in 1935 and remained until she moved to Stallings to live with her youngest
son, Randy, in 1996. She worked as a nurse and office manager for her
husband, the late Dr. Roy William Kirchberg, and as a nurse for Western
Carolina University until her retirement in 1977.
Daughter of the late Preston Tate and Molly Mae Tate, she graduated
from Chattanooga Central High School, where she played varsity basketball.
She trained at Erlanger Hospital School of Nursing in Chattanooga.
She was a charter member of her church and remained a member after she
moved to Stallings. She served as treasurer of the Sylva Woman's Business
Club, den mother for the Brownie Scouts and Sunday school teacher.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Orville Tate; and one sister,
Vera Ann Wunderlich.
Surviving are three sons, Dr. Roy W. Kirchberg Jr. of Nashville, Tenn.,
Fredrick "Rick" Kirchberg of Charlotte and Randy Tate Kirchberg
of Stallings; and one daughter, Shelia Ann Cowan of Asheville.

Clyde Austin
Clyde M. Austin, 85, of Sylva, died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003, after a
period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 21, in the chapel
of Moody Funeral Home. The Revs. David Hoyle and Steve Fox officiated.
Burial was at Fairview Memorial Gardens.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was retired from
the N.C. Department of Transportation after 28 years of service. Son
of the late Edd and Martha Hoyle Austin, he was a member of Mount Pleasant
Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Lonis Austin; and one sister,
Oberia Cagle.
Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Annie Dee Mills Austin; one daughter,
Carrie B. Trantham of Sylva; four sons, Edd Austin of Sylva, Harold
and Paul Austin, both of Waynesville, and Floyd Austin of Candler; nine
grandchildren, six stepgrandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Tania Rollman
Tania Bogrow Rollman, 92, of Asheville, died Friday, Nov. 21, 20003,
at The Oaks at Sweeten Creek after a period of declining health.
No public service is planned.
Born in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1911 to the late Valodja and Vera
P. Bogrow, she fled the revolution with her family and lived in Berlin,
Germany. She had her first formal education in Berlin, where she studied
art and design. Years later, her family moved to Paris, France.
She and her former husband, Heinz, immigrated to the U.S. in 1939. They
came to Waynesville, where they and other family members started Wellco
Shoe Factory in Hazelwood.
She volunteered for many years as a scout leader to hundreds of girls
in Brownie, Cadet, Junior and Senior troops. She moved to Asheville
in 1966 and became a field advisor for the Pisgah Girl Scout Council
for 13 years. She traveled all over Western North Carolina establishing
Girl Scout troops.
She retired from scouting in 1980 and moved to Whittier. Along with
Bertha Buff, she opened a craft shop, T 'N' B Treasures, in The Old
School on U.S. 441. They relocated their shop to Front Street in Dillsboro,
and operated the shop for 20 years.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Andre' Bogrow.
Surviving are one son, Lanny Hans Rollman of Greer, S.C.; two daughters,
Kitty Massie of Fletcher and Mia Rollman of Sarasota, Fla.; six grandchildren;
and three great-grandchildren.

Robert Frank
Robert W. Frank II, 83, of Sylva, formerly long-time resident of Arlington
Heights, Ill., died Friday, Nov. 21, 2003.
Visitation will be held Sunday, Nov. 30, from 4-8 p.m. with funeral
services at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 1, at Lauterberg & Oehler Funeral
Home, Arlington Heights. Burial will be in Memory Gardens.
He served as a Staff Sgt. in World War II in the Philippines and Asiatic
Pacific Theaters as a radar repairman. During his 40 year career he
was a salesman of industrial electronics in the Chicago area.
He was preceded in death by one son, Robert W. Frank III; and his parents,
Robert W. and Hallie Frank.
Surviving are his wife, Delores M. Keslinke Frank; and one brother,
John Frank.
