Maggie SmithMaggie Belle Smith, 70, of North River Road, Sylva, died Monday, Nov. 13, at Mission-St. Joseph's Hospital in Asheville.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, at Liberty Baptist Church. The Rev. Dameta Wilder officiated. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a member of Liberty Baptist Church. She was a former employee of Sunset Farms, Skyland Nursing Center, Harris Regional Hospital and Fairview Day Care. She was a daughter of the late Charles and Hattie Mae Hyatt. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Smith. Surviving are three brothers, William Bryson and Ronnie Hyatt of Detroit, Mich., and Charles Hyatt of Asheville; and one sister, Charlene Hyatt of Detroit, Mich. Luzene CucumberLuzene Thompson Cucumber, 75, of Cherokee's Wrights Creek community, died Wednesday, Nov. 15, at Tsali Care Center.Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. The Rev. Jim Parks officiated. Burial was in Thompson Family Cemetery. A native and lifelong resident of Cherokee, she was a member of Yellowhill Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late Jackson and Alice Wolfe Thompson. Surviving are her husband, Dave Cucumber; one son, John Wilbur Cucumber of Hendersonville; two brothers, Joe Thompson and Leroy Thompson, both of Cherokee; three sisters, Geneva Walkingstick and Nellie Driver, both of Cherokee, and Nan Brown of Robbinsville; and six grandchildren. Burial was in Sunburst Cemetery in Cecil Township. Nakisha FisherNakisha Lee Fisher, infant daughter of Andy H. and Ashley O. Fisher of Old Dillsboro Road in Sylva, died Thursday, Nov.16, at her residence.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 20, at Fall Cliff Baptist Church. The Revs. Johnny Norris and Jeff Powell officiated. Burial was in Fisher Cope Cemetery in Tuckasegee. She was preceded in death by her great-great-grandfathers, Erastic Cope and Virgil Ashe. In addition to her parents, she is survived by one brother, Tyler Fisher of the home; maternal grandparents, Lynn Gates and Roy Bumgarner of Tuckasegee; paternal grandparents, Lessie Mae Robinson of Pickens, S.C., and William Coward of Sylva; maternal great-grandparents, Dale and Brita Cope of Tuckasegee and Eulas and Lucille Bumgarner of Cullowhee; paternal great-grandfather, Glen Bryson of Sylva; and maternal great-great-grandmothers, Hulda Ashe of Tuckasegee and Bealuh Cope of Concord. Billy Hobbs Sr.Billy Joseph Hobbs Sr., 76, of Tilley Creek Road, Cullowhee, died Thursday, Nov.16, at his residence after a period of declining health.A private service will be held at a later date in Chattanooga, Tenn. A native of Salt Lake City, he had lived in Jackson County for the past three and a half years. He was a retired building contractor, a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a son of the late William Denzel and Rose Smith Hobbs. He was preceded in death by his wife, Laura "Phonsie" Greene Hobbs, who died in 1988. Surviving are two daughters, Pam Sterka of Cullowhee and Tina Darlene Sackett of Davenport, Fla.; one son, Billy J. Hobbs Jr. of Gardnerville, Nev.; two brothers, Delbert Hobbs of Montclair, Calif., and William Hobbs of Corona, Calif.; and two grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the local Humane Society. Allen, 95, of Sylva's Greens Creek community, died Wednesday, Nov.15, at Harris Regional Hospital after a brief illness.Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, at Greens Creek Baptist Church, of which she was a charter member. The Revs. Steve Bialy and Bill Sutton officiated. Burial was in Greens Creek Cemetery. Grandsons served as pallbearers. A native of Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late L.C. "Lum" and Emma Green Buchanan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Scott Allen, who died in 1978; one son, Jimmy Allen; one great-grandson; and one great-great-grandson. Surviving are two daughters, Barbara Green and Pauline Allison, both of Sylva; two sons, Edward Allen of Sylva and Lindon Allen of Whittier; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. The Rev. Bo Parris officiated. Military graveside rites were conducted by Steve Youngdeer American Legion Post 143. A native of Swain County, he was a retired plumber with Indian Health Services. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a member of Straight Fork Baptist Church. He was the son of the late Gukuis and Lizzie Davis Tooni. He was preceded in death by his wife, Olivan Panther Tooni. Surviving is one sister, Rachel Tooni Watty of Cherokee. Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Tulin MiddletonTulin Frizzell Middleton, 76, of Sylva's Little Savannah community, died Friday, Nov.17, in a Sylva nursing center.Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 20, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. The Revs. Clifford Parker, Eddie Stillwell and Dillard Moore officiated. Burial was in Stillwell Cemetery in Sylva. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a member of Little Savannah Baptist Church, a former employee of Stovall's 5 & 10 and retired from McCrory's in Sylva. She was a daughter of the late Norman and Ethel Buchanan Frizzell and wife of the late Harold Lawrence Middleton Sr. She was also preceded in death by one son, Harold Lawrence Middleton Jr.; three sisters, Aileen Orr, Janie Sue Frizzell and Mary Elizabeth Frizzell; and two brothers, James Jason Frizzell and Rufus Paul Frizzell. Surviving are three brothers, Vearl Frizzell of Lexington and Earl and Carl Frizzell, both of Sylva; three sisters, Mae Nicholson of Lexington, Leigh Barker of Clemmons and Nina Crawford of Sylva; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Breakiron, 72, of Briarcliffe West, Myrtle Beach, S.C., died Friday, Nov. 17, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center.Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 22, at the Old Cadet Chapel, West Point, N.Y. Burial was in Post Cemetery, West Point. A native of Bridgeton, N.J., she was a daughter of the late August and Victoria Purvis Dielens. She moved to Myrtle Beach, S.C., 20 years ago from Annadale, Va. She graduated from high school in Upper Darby, Pa., and was a homemaker. Surviving are her husband, Dick Breakiron of Myrtle Beach; one son, Richard C. Breakiron Jr. of Aiken, S.C.; two daughters, Dawn E. Breakiron of Webster and Diane E. Breakiron of Reston, Va.; one brother, Gus Dielens of Tampa, Fla.; and five grandchildren.
