Obituary Information

The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Robert Lillard

Robert D. Lillard, 73, of Ferguson Road, Sylva, died Friday, Nov. 14, 2003, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, at Long Branch Baptist Church, of which he was a member. The Revs. Avery Brown and Charles Carnes officiated. Burial was in Franklin Cemetery with military rites conducted by the U.S. Marines and Steve Youngdeer American Legion Post 143, of which he was a member. Pallbearers were Kevin Brown, Chris Queen, Ronnie DeHart, Ronnie Sutton, Carl DeHart, Steve Lillard and Ray Williamson.

A native of Pennsylvania, he was born June 1, 1930, and lived in Jackson County most of his life. He retired from Western Carolina University in ground maintenance, was a U.S. Marine veteran of the Korean War and was one of the few survivors of the battle of the Chosin Reservoir. A member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, he was a son of the late Sherman Lillard Sr. and Dora Crowe Lillard.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Rhonda Jean Lillard; one son, Robert C. Lillard; four brothers and one sister.


Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Doris Wykle Lillard; two daughters, Kathy Brown of Sylva and Lynn Queen of Cullowhee; two sons, Rick Lillard of Sylva and Steve Lillard of Sylva, currently serving in Baghdad, Iraq; three sisters, Alice DeHart of Sylva, Lib Potts of Canton, Ohio, and Rowena Tolley of Cherokee; two brothers, Allan Lillard and Samuel Robinson, both of Sylva; and six grandchildren.

Brenda Williams

Brenda Nations Williams, 43, of Murphy, formerly of Whittier, died Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2003, at Angel Medical Center after a brief illness.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Revs. Calvin Murphy and Max Cochran officiated. Burial was in Nations Creek Cemetery.

A native of Jackson County, she lived for several years in Hayesville and Murphy. She was a sales representative for AmeriGas, Inc. A 1978 graduate of Sylva-Webster High School, she received an associate business degree at Southwestern Community College and was a member of Walker Road Baptist Church in Murphy.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Marylin Connie Nations.

Surviving are her parents, Pat and Dora Jones Nations of Whittier; one son, Joshua Aaron Williams of the home; and a twin sister, Barbara Ashe of Whittier.

Memorials may be made to Joshua Aaron Williams Fund at any State Employee Credit Union.

Roger Monteith

Roger Clifton Monteith, 64, of Brevard, died of cancer Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2003, at his home.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, at Coopers Gap Baptist Church Cemetery in Polk County. The Rev. Warren Godfrey officiated.

He was born Oct. 22, 1939, in Swain County and was a son of the late Martha Cable Monteith and Gordon Monteith.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Olin Monteith and Harold Monteith.

He graduated from Sylva High School, attended Western Carolina University and served in the United States Army. He was a State Farm agent in Brevard for 35 years, retiring Oct. 31, 2002.

Surviving are his wife, Frankie G. Monteith; two sons, Roger C. Monteith Jr. of New Bern and Samuel G. Monteith of Charlotte; and three sisters, Willa Rae Stanberry of Boone, Inez Smith of Sylva and Joretta Moon of Sylva.

James Cook

James “Art" Cook, 73, a long time resident of Lyman, Wash., died on Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2003, while hunting near Winthrop, Wash.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 17, at Lyman Baptist Church, of which he was a member.

Pastor Ron Schenk officiated. Burial followed at the Lyman Cemetery with military honors provided by George Baldridge Post 31 American Legion.

Son of the late Paul and Gennie Morgan Cook, he was born May 21, 1930, in Cullowhee's Caney Fork community. He had been a Skagit County resident since 1941.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving from 1948 to 1952 in the Korean War as a heavy equipment engineer.

He worked as a diesel mechanic for many years for N.C. Machinery in Mount Vernon, Alaska, retiring in 1990.

On June 13, 1953, he married Mabel Ann Campbell at the Hamilton Baptist Church and the couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in June.

He was preceded in death by one son, Jeff; and four brothers, Floyd, Baxter, Herman and Blaine.

Surviving are his wife, Mabel Ann Campbell Cook of Lyman; two sons, Frank Cook of Lyman and Jim Cook of Sedro-Woolley, Wash.; two daughters, Sherry Black of Sedro-Woolley; and Alesia Van Pelt of Burlington, Wash.; one brother, Lyle Cook of Sedro Woolley; two sisters, Mag Hughley and Marie Presnell, both of Stanwood, Wash.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Joseph Nicholson

Joseph Leon Nicholson, 61, of Salt Lake City, Utah, died Thursday, Nov. 13, 2003, after surgery.

A native of Jackson County, he was a son of the late Raymond and Alda Nicholson.

Surviving are his wife, Tamera; two sisters, Jean Cogdill and Joyce Evans, both of Sylva; and one brother, Raymond Nicholson Jr. of Rockwood, Tenn.

Maxwell Brasch

Maxwell Fredrick Brasch, 91, of Cullowhee, died Saturday, Nov. 15, 2003, at Autumn Care Nursing Home in Waynesville.

Funeral services will be held at noon today (Thursday) at St. David's Episcopal Church, of which he was a member. Father Michael Hudson will officiate. The family will receive friends following the services. His ashes will be laid to rest in Chesapeake Bay.

He was born on June 1, 1912, in Palo Alto, Calif., to the late Fredrick Edward and Winifred Elizabeth Orpin Brasch. He attended George Washington University in Washington, D.C., before entering the United States Army in 1937. After serving for 30 years in the Army, he retired in 1967.

He was a film maker and writer. He married Essie Mae "Midge" Hall on Jan. 13, 1990, in Wilmington, Del.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, is one sister, Carolyn Mulford of Silverton, Idaho.

Danny Britt

Danny Morris Britt, 63, of Lumberton, died Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2003, at Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, at Smyrna Baptist Church. The Rev. Shelly Dial officiated. Burial followed in Robeson Memorial Park.

He was a son of the late Hilbert and Katie Britt.

Surviving are his wife, Earm Neil Norton Britt; two daughters, Carolyn Floyd of Whittier and Robin Davis of Lumberton; one son, Chris Britt of Salisbury; two sisters, Shelby Faulk of Orrum and Carolyn Bock of Monroe; five brothers, James Martin "Buddy" Britt, Roger Britt, Darrell Wayne Britt and John Wicker Jr., all of Lumberton, and Hollice Britt of Orrum; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Lorraine Eastridge

Lorraine Duckett Eastridge, 45, of Happy Ridge Lane, Sylva, died Monday, Nov. 17, 2003, at her residence after a period of declining health.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, at Balsam Ridge Baptist Church, of which she was a member. The Rev. Mel Thurman and Brother Terry Bowen will officiate. Burial will be in Buchanan Cemetery, Waynesville.

A native of Newberry, S.C., she lived in Jackson County since 1995. Daughter of the late Guy Duckett, Jr., she was the recreation coordinator with Lifespan.

She was preceded in death by one brother, William Helms, Jr.

Surviving are her husband of 16 years, the Rev. William J. Eastridge; mother and stepfather, Pearl Cox and Bill Helms of Charlotte; two daughters, Sharron F. De'Boben of Tampa, Fla., and Connie Teaque of Kernersville; two sons, Paul Henry Robinson, Jr. of Sylva and Thomas J. Eastridge of Greensboro; two sisters, Guynita Hoesman of Concord and Sherry Basaldua of Charlotte; one brother, Terry Lee Duckett of Charlotte; and six grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Balsam Ridge Baptist Church, 464 Balsam Ridge Rd., Waynesville, N.C. 28786.
The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. tonight (Thursday) at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home.
