Naomi Brooks

Naomi Jones Brooks, 70, of Rich Drive, Whittier, died Sunday, Nov.12, at her residence. Funeral services were be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, at Rockdale Baptist Church. The Revs. Larry Nations and Harry Vance officiated. Burial was in Barkers Creek Cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a member of Rockdale Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late Jessie and Beuna Nations Jones.

Surviving are her husband of 53 years, Richard Brooks; three daughters, Julia Rhinehart of Waynesville and Rita Elders and Rachel Gates, both of Sylva; two brothers, Felix Jones of Sylva and Clyde Jones of Everet, Wash.; and eight sisters, Anna Sue Dillard, Jolene Davis and Mary D. Beasley of Sylva, Janet Cabe of Darrington, Wash., Willa M. Bumgamer of Franklin, Cleo Coggins of Roberta, Ga., Dora Nations of Whittier and Peggy Cooper of Pasco, Wash.

Memorials may be made to Barkers Creek Cemetery Fund, c/o Doris Brooks, 277 Beech Tree Road, Whittier, N.C. 28789; or to Hospice of WestCare, 68 Hospital Road, Sylva, N.C. 28779. Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Wallace Wood

Wallace Wood, 78, of Nedy Mountain Road, Tuckasegee, died Monday, Nov. 13, at his residence after an extended illness.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Tommy Owen and Truitt Owen will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will Bill Case, Tony Higdon, Robert Gunter, Roy Queen, Bucky Stewart and Steve Boley.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he retired from the Department of Transportation's road maintenance department. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of Dodgen Ridge Baptist Church for more than 50 years, where he was a charter member and served as a deacon and trustee. He was the son of the late Cleave and Minnie Brown Wood.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Doris Ashley and Irma Rogers.

Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Mildred B. Wood; one daughter, Sandra Wood Shular of Candler; two sons, Darrell Wood of Sapphire and Bill Wood of Titusville, Fla.; one sister, Edna Wood of Winter Haven. Fla.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family was to have received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, at the funeral home.



G.B. Chiltoskey

G.B. Chiltoskey, 93, of Acquoni Road, Cherokee, died Sunday, Nov. 12, at his residence.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, at Acqouni Baptist Church. The Rev. Merritt Youngdeer officiated. Burial was in the Drama Cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of the Cherokee Indian Reservation, he was a former educator and retired from the civil service with the U.S. government. He was a master craftsman, specializing in and best known for his wood carvings, which are in numerous local, national and international museums.

He was a founding member of Qualla Arts and Crafts and the Southern Craftsman's Guild and was a member of the International Wood Collectors Society. He was a writer and speaker who co-authored many books and spoke at numerous schools, colleges and universities with his wife, the late Mary Chiltoskey, who died Oct. 12. He was an avid sportsman in blowgun, basketball, football and bowling. He supported athletics and was recently honored as a lifelong athletic booster.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents Will and Charlotte Hornbuckle Chiltoskie; two brothers, Ute Crowe and Watty Chiltoskie; and one sister, Sallie Chiltoskie Crowe.

Surviving are several nieces, nephews and numerous great nieces and nephews.

Mary Shell

Mary Lossiah Shell, 87, of Cherokee's Yellowhill community, died Friday, Nov. 10, at her residence.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 12, at Yellowhill Baptist Church. The Revs. Roland Whitaker and Larry Perry officiated. Burial was in the Shell Family Cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of Swain County, she was a member of Yellowhill Baptist Church, a member of the NAIWA Club and was an active volunteer demonstrating finger weaving for various groups. She was the daughter of the late Henry and Aggie Ross Lossiah.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Boyd B. Shell.

Surviving are one son, Boyd Henry Shell; three daughters, Hazel Shell, Martha Cucumber and Betty Toineeta; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Anna Fisher

Anna Mae Phillips Fisher, 67, of Sylva's Willets community, died Tuesday, Nov. 7.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. The Rev. Bobby Locklear officiated. Burial was in Hoyle Cemetery. Pallbearers were Dan Cogdill, Joseph Harrell, Russell Salter, Clay Cogdill and Roger Phillips.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late Howard Taft and Ruby Dalrymple Phillips.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Carlton Phillips; and one son, Neal Fisher.

Surviving are her husband of 49 years, Billy J. Fisher; two brothers, Ray and Donald Phillips, both of Sylva; and two sisters, Betty Phillips Stringfield of Kinston and Alva Crisp of Sylva.

Michael Ashe

Annie Mae Jones Moseman, 78, of Sylva, died Monday, Nov. 13, at Harris Regional Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today (Thursday) in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. The Revs. Charles Carnes and Eddie Stillwell will officiate. Burial will be at Fairview Memorial Gardens.

A native of Jackson County, she was retired from the Jarrett House in Dillsboro and was a member of Jarrett Memorial Baptist Church. She was the daughter of the late Leonard and Martha McMahan Jones and wife of the late M.L. Moseman.

Surviving are two daughters, Annette Burns of Dillsboro and Jackie Brooks of Sylva; three grandsons; and three great-grandsons.

The family was to have received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, at Moody Funeral Home.



Jean Gegan

Jean Allison Gegan, 74, of Webster, died Monday, Nov. 13, at her residence.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Thursday) at Sylva First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Joe Fulk will officiate. Burial will be in Keener Cemetery.

A native of Jackson County, she was formerly of Memphis, Tenn., and Auburn, Ala., moving back to Webster in 1984. She was a graduate of Sylva High School, the University of Tennessee and Memphis State University and a member of Kappa Delta sorority.

While living in Memphis and Auburn, she was active in community, civic and church affairs. Since returning to Sylva, she was a member of the 20th Century Club, Bennie Book Club, chairman of the Emma Allison Art Award at Western Carolina University and a member of several bridge clubs. She was a member of Sylva First United Methodist Church, was active in the church and served on numerous committees. She was a member of the Afternoon Circle and was an accomplished needle pointer.

She was the daughter of the late Daniel M. and Emma Johnson Allison Sr. and wife of the late Dr. Edward L. Gegan Sr.

Surviving are one son, Ed Gegan of Webster; one brother, Dan M. Allison Jr. of Sylva; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family was to have received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.



Kathy Jamison

Kathy Sue Shephard Jamison, 42, of Henrietta Road, Harris, formerly of Sylva, died Sunday, Nov., 12, at her residence.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

A native of Jackson County, she was a nursing home and retirement home worker.

Surviving are her mother and stepfather, Carolyn Parker McCoy and Padgett of Sylva; her father and stepmother, Tom Shephard and May of Pensacola, Fla.; one son, Ben Tucker of Arlington, Va.; one daughter, Wendy Jamison of the home; two brothers, Steve Shephard of Yorktown, Va., and Patrick McCoy of Sylva; and one grandson.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
