When possible, obituaries should be sent to the Herald from the funeral home. Information received will be placed in our standard obituary format.

We publish names of all of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Koons Koons

Eleanor Koons

Eleanor "Peggy" Koons, 75, of Cullowhee's Caney Fork community, died Friday, Oct. 25, 2002, after a long illness.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, at Sugar Creek Freewill Baptist Church.

She and her husband moved to Caney Fork in 1994 after retiring from their work in Sarasota, Fla. In the first years of their marriage, she assisted in her husband's contracting business drawing plans.

In 1986, she decided to pursue her education and received a master's degree in social work in 1988 from the University of South Florida. She was a social worker and was instrumental is starting a Hospice program for children with AIDS in Sarasota.

After moving to Jackson County, she volunteered with Hospice and with Friends of the Library.

Surviving are her husband of 58 years, Nelson A. Koons; two daughters, Linda Reinhart of Caney Fork and Barbara Hoover of Arizona; one brother, Robert Swafford of Florida; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.



Johnny LeQuire

Johnny LeQuire, 43, of Webster, died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002, in Harris Regional Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, in the chapel of Bill Moody Funeral Home, Bryson City. His uncle, the Rev. Lonnie Ramsey of Hickory, officiated. Burial was in Swain Memorial Park.

A native of Swain County, he had lived in Jackson County the past 15 years. He was a son of Arvil and the late Shirley Florence Ivans LeQuire. He was owner and operator of Johnny's Grill in Tuckasegee and a member of East Alarka Baptist Church.

In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by one brother, Billy Ray LeQuire; paternal grandparents, Glen and Mae Burrell LeQuire; and maternal grandparents, Richard and Mary Ivans Davis.

Surviving, in addition to his father, are his wife of 25 years, Eleanor Ramsey LeQuire; two sons, Jamie Wayne LeQuire of Cherokee and Chad Ray LeQuire of the home; one daughter, Cheryl LeQuire of the home; five brothers, Michael LeQuire of Whitewater, Wis., and Gary LeQuire, Tony LeQuire, Darrell LeQuire and Brandon LeQuire, all of Bryson City; and one grandson.

Janet Stanton

Janet Renninger Stanton, 64, of Pressley Creek Road, Cullowhee, died of cancer Sunday, Nov. 10, 2002, in Harris Regional Hospital.

A private memorial service will be held on Thanksgiving.

A native of Tifton, Ohio, she had lived in Cullowhee for the past six years. Daughter of the late Otto and Lucille Hile Renninger, she was a bookkeeper for Blumer-Stanton.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Joyce Palmer; and one brother, Michary McCrary.

Surviving are her husband of 47 years, William K. Stanton; two daughters, Marcille Erwin of Florida and Janet Allen of Cullowhee; three sons, William W. Stanton and Roger K. Stanton, both of Jupiter, Fla., and Charles A. Stanton of Cullowhee; two brothers, Harold Renninger of Texas and Richard Renninger of Washington; and 17 grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to one's favorite charity.

Hattie Deitz

Hattie Harris Deitz, 79, of Mitchell Road, Sylva, died Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002, at her residence after a brief illness.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, at Scotts Creek Baptist Church. The Revs. Rich Peoples and Eddie Stillwell officiated. Burial was in Old Field Cemetery. Pallbearers were Kevin Monteith, Jacob Monteith, Alton Johnson, Danny Orr, Greg Galloway and Richard Conley.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson County and a member of Scotts Creek Baptist Church, where she was in the WMU. She was a daughter of the late John Wesley and Florence Hunnicutt Harris.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Medford Ranson Deitz, who died in 1991; one sister, Nova Robinson; and one brother, Amos Harris.

Surviving are two daughters, Carolyn D. Johnson of Whittier and Pamela D. Galloway of Cullowhee; one son, Michael M. Deitz of Gainesville, Ga.; two sisters, Elva Ridley of Sylva and Jean Middleton of Lake Norman; two brothers, Homer Harris of Sylva and James Harris of Andrews; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Lawanda Raby

Lawanda Susie Jackson Raby, 48, of Mary Jackson Road, Whittier, died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, at her residence after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Bishop Rudd officiated. Burial was in Sherrill Cemetery. Pallbearers were Dan Cuttler, Henson Littlejohn Jr., Ronnie Blythe, Tim McCourtney, Stu Flying, Jerry Jackson, Mark Kanott and Arthur "Twoleaf" Sluder Jr.

A native of Swain County, she lived most of her life in Jackson County. She was a dental hygienist assistant for Indian Health and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was a daughter of Helen Harriett Bradley Jackson of Cherokee and the late Boyd Stonewell Jackson.

Surviving, in addition to her mother, are her husband of 28 years, Jerry Max Raby; two sons, Jeremy Justin Raby of Cherokee and John Wesley Raby of the home; one sister, Mary Jackson Smith of Cherokee; and two brothers, Edwin Saunooke and Vincent Jackson, both of Cherokee.

Billie Owen

Billie Francis Kitchen Owen, 68, of Sylva, died Sunday, Nov. 10, 2002, at Haywood Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, in the chapel of Garrett Funerals and Cremations. The Rev. John Christy officiated. Burial was in Garrett Hillcrest Memorial Park. Pallbearers were Jim Sitton, David Sitton, Chris Roberts, David Evanson, Harold Long and J.C. Long Jr.

Born Dec. 10, 1933, in Hayesville, she was a daughter of the late P.R. and Nell Long Kitchen. She was a graduate of the Women's College of the University of North Carolina and was a member of First Methodist Church of Waynesville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William H. Owen Jr.

Surviving are one son, William H. Owen III of Cranberry Township, Pa.; one daughter, Angela Owen Roberts of Sylva; two sisters, Linda Kitchen Brown of Atlanta and Rita Kitchen Sitton of Greensboro; and six grandchildren.

Roy Martin

Roy Lee Martin, 81, of Sylva's Fisher Creek community, died Friday, Nov. 8, 2002, in Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. The Rev. Sue Burton officiated. Burial followed in Miami Memorial Gardens in Florida.

A native of Danielsville, Ga., and winter resident of Miami, he was a retired heavy equipment operator with the Dade County Parks and Recreation Department in Miami. He was the son of the late Avery Lee and Mimmie Dodie Berryman Martin.

Surviving are his wife, Elaine Cooper Martin; two sons, Jerry Robert Martin of Tallahassee, Fla., and Lee Roy Martin of Saluda; one daughter, Gloria Martin Green of Pembroke Pines, Fla.; one sister, Lucille David of Athens, Ga.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Joanna Byrd

Joanna Inger Byrd, 101, of Carolina Village in Hendersonville, died Friday, Nov. 8, 2002, following a brief period of declining health.

No services are planned.

Born on Dec. 3, 1900, in Cambridge, Mass., to James and Mary Inger Falconer, she was a prior resident of Lakeland, Fla., before moving to Henderson County in 1971. She was the wife of the late John Dymond Byrd, a professor of English at Florida Southern College, who died in 1954.

She received her bachelor of arts degree from Boston University and her master of arts degree from Middlebury College, including graduate courses at La Sorbonne in Paris, France, where she met her husband. She served as a French teacher in several schools, including Miss Porter's School in Farmington, Conn., and Lakeland High School. She attended St. John In-the-Wilderness Episcopal Church in Flat Rock.

Surviving are one son, Frank Byrd of Hendersonville; two daughters, Mary Byrd Davis of Georgetown, Ky., and Joan Byrd Rector of Cullowhee; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Henderson County Habitat for Humanity, P.O. Box 2564, Hendersonville, N.C. 28793; or to the Blue Ridge Community College Educational Foundation, College Drive, Flat Rock, N.C. 28731.

Raymond Owl

Raymond Owl Sr., 84, of Old River Road, Cherokee, died Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002, in a Swain County health care facility.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, at Acquoni Baptist Chapel. Ray Kinsland and the Rev. Robert Christopher officiated. Burial was in Yellow Hill Veterans Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by Steve Youngdeer Post 143.

A native of Swain County, he was the son of the late Ammons and Elizabeth Sequoyah Owl. He was an employee of the Cherokee Boys Club for more than 60 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Surviving his wife of 63 years, Margaret Toineeta Owl; five daughters, Nancy Owl of Cherokee, June Nephew of Winter Park, Fla., Cathy Blythe of Bryson City, Betty Moreland of Whittier and Barbara Owl of Cherokee; three sons, Raymond Owl Jr., George Owl and Adam Blythe, all of Cherokee; one foster daughter, Sharon Reed of Nebo; one sister, Katherine Owl of Cherokee; and five grandchildren.

Elizabeth Cope

Elizabeth Davis Cope, 86, of Sylva, died Sunday, Nov. 10, 2002.

A memorial service was held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, at Sylva Presbyterian Church. Riley Covin officiated.

She was born Oct. 13, 1916, in Mecklenburg County to John Sample Davis and Cora Jordan Davis.

She was a retired school teacher, having taught in Cabarrus and Jackson counties. As a charter member of Sylva Presbyterian Church, she served as an elder. She was active in many civic organizations and in Alpha Delta Kappa, a professional educators' sorority. She lived in Brighten Gardens in Greensboro preceding her death.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Grayson Carl Cope, whom she married May 3, 1939; one brother, John S. Davis Jr.; and one grandson.

Surviving are one son, Marvin Davis Cope of Livermore, Calif.; two daughters, Maureen Cope Wade of Panama City, Fla., and Marsha Cope Cole of Greensboro; one brother, William Andrew Davis of Charlotte; and three grandchildren.

Letha Sutton

Letha Ervin Sutton, 84, of Thomas Valley Road, Whittier, died Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, in Harris Regional Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, at Whittier United Methodist Church, of which she was a member. The Rev. Hal Finney officiated. The body was taken to Etowah, Tenn., for a visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, with an 8 p.m. service at Bordwine Funeral Home. Dr. Gerald Atkins officiated. Burial will held at 11 a.m. today (Thursday) in Greenhill Cemetery in Etowah, Tenn.

Daughter of the late Benjamin and Mary Arizona Toomey Ervin, she was a native of Englewood, Tenn., and had lived in Jackson County for the past several years. She was a sales clerk for J.C. Penney and worked at The Bookstore (Hallmark Card Shop) in Sylva.

She was preceded in death by her husband, "R.D." Denver Sutton, who died in 1998; an infant son, James Denver Sutton; and two brothers, Edward and Pat Ervin. Surviving are two sisters, Sarah Cantrell of Etowah, Tenn., and Ida Lou Duggan of Englewood, Tenn.

Dallas Parker

Dallas Parker, 59, of Arrowood Road, Sylva, died Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, at his residence after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Rev. Dillard Moore and Danny Paxton officiated. Burial was in East LaPorte Cemetery. Pallbearers were Johnny Smathers, Donnie Jones, Eddie Mace, Lester Bryson, Woodrow Bryson and Stacy Green.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a self-employed carpenter and the son of the late John Woodford and Edna Fore Paxton Parker.

He was preceded in death by one son, Dallas Dean Parker, and one great-grandchild.

Surviving are his wife of 35 years, Helen Broom Parker; three daughters, Frankie Fisher and Nada Jones, both of Sylva, and Vicky Parker Ferguson of Waynesville; two sisters, Pat Green of Sylva and Joy Hoffman of Charlotte; three brothers, Ron Paxton of Salisbury, Danny Paxton of Concord and David Paxton of Mooresville; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Dick Wade

Dr. V.C. "Dick" Wade, 81, of Valdosta, Ga., died Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002.

Gravesides services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, at Sunset Hill Cemetery. The Rev. Charlie Scarborough officiated.

Born in Macon, Ga., on Oct. 11, 1921, he was the son of the late Charles R. and Virginia Collier Wade. During World War II he was a flight instructor with the U.S. Navy. After graduation from the Medical College of Georgia, he resumed his military career, serving in the U.S. Navy as a doctor. In 1953, he estabished a private medical practice in Valdosta, where he was a 50-year resident.

He was preceded in death by one son, Richard Collier Wade. Surviving are two daughters, Susan Stewart of Daytona Beach, Fla., and Cindy Wade Brett of Cullowhee; one granddaughter; and two step-grandchildren. Carson McLane Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Mamie Woods

Mamie Parris Woods, 86, formerly of 600 E. Henry St., Lot 39, Belmont, died Monday, Oct. 21, 2002, at Lincoln Medical Center.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, in the Colonial Chapel of Carothers Funeral Home, Belmont. The Rev Doug Bryant officiated. A graveside service was held at 4 p.m. at Holy Springs Baptist Church Cemetery in Swain County.

A native of Sylva, she was a daughter of the late John B. and Lizzie Pannell Parris. She worked at Climax Mills in Belmont and retired from American-Efird. She was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Theron George Woods; six brothers, Carl, Rob, Lewis, Roy, Delies and Charlie Parris; and one sister, Etta Freeman.

Surviving are one son, Kenneth Woods of Lincolnton; two daughters, Joan Price and Helen Warren, both of Belmont; two brothers, Ray and Ronnie Parris, both of Sylva; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

George Rogers Sr.

George Daniel Rogers Sr., 92, of Whittier, died at his residence Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, in the chapel of Bill Moody Funeral Home. The Rev. Lelon Greene officiated. Burial was in Hensley Cemetery.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Swain County. Son of the late Dock and Hattie Cordell Rogers, he was a mechanic specializing in antique automobiles. He was a member of Conley Creek Freewill Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth Louise Cooper Rogers, who died in 1983; two brothers; and one sister.

Surviving are his wife, Georgia Mae Moore Rogers; two sons, George Daniel Rogers Jr. of Whittier and John Rogers of Waynesville; six daughters, Martha Gillette of Whittier, Mary Fisher of Sylva, and Hestle Rogers, Cora Rogers, Joyce Ann Rogers and Juanita Rogers, all of South Carolina; three stepdaughters, Dora Mae Moore Mangum and Edna Fay Cody, both of Bryson City, and Dorothy Eaden of Flowery Branch, Ga.; two stepsons, William Cas Moore Jr. and Daniel Moore, both of Bryson City; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; 11 step-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.



Minnie Feather

Minnie Smith Feather, 84, of Cherokee, died at her residence Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002, after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 8, at the residence on Grassy Branch Road, Cherokee. The Revs. Noah Crowe and Michael Wadhams officiated. Burial was at Feather Family Cemetery.

A native of Swain County, she was a traditional turtle rattle maker and member of the Baptist faith. She was the daughter of the late Joe and Pearl Maney Smith. She was preceded in death by her husband of 30 years, Jonah Feather; one son, Dave Feather; and one daughter, Julia Ann Feather.

Surviving are six daughters, Elsie Feather, Darlene Ledford, Mary Lou Feather, Rosa Feather, Ella Lee Lossiah and Betty Sue Feather; one son, Joe Feather; 28 grandchildren; 69 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Virgil Allen

Virgil Allen of Valley Road, Cashiers, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002, at his residence.

Henry Otter

Henry Otter of Cherokee died Wednesday, Nov. 13, at Cherokee Indian Hospital.

Wilbur Glore

Wilbur "Bill" Glore, 86, of Labelle, Fla., a seasonal resident of Jackson and Haywood counties, died Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002, at his residence in Jackson County after a period of declining health.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, in Davis Chapel Cemetery in Mableton, Ga. The Rev. Eddie Barton will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight (Thursday) at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home.

A native of Mableton, Ga., he had been a seasonal resident of Jackson and Haywood counties since 1981. He retired as owner and operator of Glore Carpets. A U.S. Navy veteran and member of First Baptist Church of Mableton, he was a son of the late Charlie Clyde and Mabel Davis Glore.

He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

Surviving are his wife of 14 years, Edna Sitton Glore; three daughters, Debra Porter of Minnesota, Sharon Harmon of LaBelle, Fla., and Sandra Glore of Florida; one stepdaughter, Barbara Sitton of Sylva; one stepson, Harold Sitton of Sylva; two sisters, Mary Dickerson of Mableton, Ga., and Thelma Deal of Lithia Spring, Ga.; two brothers, Henry Glore of Blairsville, Ga., and Donald Glore of Mableton, Ga.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three step grandchildren; and three step great-grandchildren.

Hayes Deitz

Hayes Deitz, 80, of E. Hall Heights, Sylva, died Friday, Nov. 8, 2002, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, at New Hope Baptist Church, of which he was a member. The Revs. Mike Moore, Eddie Deitz and Tyrone Allen officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Jacob Myers, Zeke Donley, Michael Deitz, James Pedi, Tom Talbott and Daniel Phillips.

A native of Jackson County's East Fork community, he had moved back here five years ago. He was a retired Baptist minister for more than 40 years, serving as pastor at Carrollton Baptist, Bible Baptist Church, Groce Temple and assistant pastor at Temple Baptist Church. He was a son of the late Richmond and Myra Webb Deitz.

He was preceded in death by one son, Ray Deitz; and one daughter, Kay Donley.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Mary Louise Crawford Deitz; two daughters, Gail Myers of Tuckasegee and Ann Allen of Candler; two sisters, Ona Bee Fox of Cullowhee and Rachel Johnson of Phoenix, Ariz.; three brothers, Enloe Deitz of Ft. Myers, Fla., Forester Deitz of Waynesville and T.F. Deitz of Carrollton, Ohio; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
