Obituary Information

The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Thomas Hooper

Thomas Leon Hooper, 80, of Waynesville, died Sunday, Nov. 9, 2003, at his home.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, in the chapel of Garrett Funerals and Cremations. The Rev. Charles Dean officiated. Burial was in Cullowhee Baptist Church Cemetery.

Son of the late Thomas Reuben and Dolly Gosnell Hooper, he was born on Aug. 24, 1923, in Barberton, Ohio.

He retired from the Naval Reserve in 1983 after serving in World War II with the Fleet Airwing 7 Antisub and Antiship Operation in Dunkeswell, England. He was an area manager for Suburban Propane for 38 years.

He was instrumental in forming the Haywood County Rescue Squad, where he was a captain for 18 years and a member from 1957 to 1977. He was also a member of Long’s Chapel United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Otto Hooper.

Surviving are his wife, Gracie D. Pipkin Hooper of Waynesville; one son, Geoffrey K. Hooper of Stony Point; one stepdaughter, Dianna D. Crumpler of Portsmouth, Va.; one stepson, Timothy W. Davenport of Suffolk, Va.; four sisters, Mamie Raby of Franklin, Velma Plemmons and Lois Ensley, both of Sylva, and Naomi Green of Anchorage, Alaska; one granddaughter; one great-granddaughter; and three step grandchildren.

Mary Farmer

Mary H. Farmer, 67, of Sprint Lane, Sylva, died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2003, at her residence after an extended illness.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, at New Hope Baptist Church, of which she was a member. The Revs. Mike Moore, Earl Holden and Carl Adams officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Jackson County, where she lived most of her life. She worked in the dietary department at Skyland Care Center. She was a daughter of the late John and Carrie Miller Harris.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Annie Belle Taylor; and six brothers, Gaston, C.J., Adam, Asbury, John Harris Jr. and Benjamin Harris.

Surviving are her husband of 50 years, James W. Farmer; one daughter, Debbie F. Owen of Sylva; one son, Raymond Farmer of Sylva; two sisters, Evelyn Holmes of Lexington and Rosie Tellie of Sylva; one brother, Paul Harris of Lexington; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

George Martin

George Martin Jr., 79, of the Ela community, died Friday, Nov. 7, 2003, at his residence.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, at Yellow Hill Veterans Cemetery. The Rev. Lelon Greene officiated.

Crisp Funeral Home, Bryson City, was in charge of arrangements.

Sol Schulman

Sol Schulman, 91, of 13 Jackson St., Sylva, died Monday, Nov. 10, 2003, after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, at Moody Funeral Home. Rabbi Dr. Michael Samuel officiated. Burial was at 2 p.m. at Lou Pollock Cemetery in Asheville. A celebration of Schulman’s life followed from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the home of David Schulman in Skyland.

Born in New York City, he graduated high school in Reidsville and came to Sylva in 1933 at the age of 20. He opened Schulman’s Department Store and was a downtown mainstay for 70 years in the same location until ill health forced him to close his store last year. At that time Schulman donated his store inventory to the WestCare Foundation for their fund-raising.

Over his lifetime Schulman took leading roles in supporting the Sylva Merchants Association, Jackson County Chamber of Commerce, Harris Regional Hospital, Western Carolina University, Fontana Regional Library,

Dillsboro Masonic Lodge, Sylva Lions Club and Beth Israel Synagogue, as well as assisting hundreds of individuals and churches. He was a Sylva town board member for five years.

In December 2002 Western Carolina University presented him with an honorary doctorate.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Lillian Schulman.

Surviving are two sons, Herbert Schulman of Cullowhee and David Schulman of Asheville; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Mary Phillips

Mary Alice Cowan Phillips, 77, of Newburgh, Ind., died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2003, at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Ind.

Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, at Cullowhee Cemetery. The Rev. Larry Bryson officiated.

A native of Jackson County, she was a graduate of Western Carolina University and George Peabody and was retired from Gastonia City Schools. She was a daughter of the late James Jasper and Elizabeth Hicks Ashe Cowan.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Jake Phillips, Jr.; two sisters, Edith Jane Cowan and Gladys Kiker; and two brothers, Cordell M. Cowan and Hoyle Deitz.

Surviving are one son, Ernest Jake Phillips III of Evansville; one sister, Stella Smith of Coco Beach, Fla.; and two brothers, Jack Lee Cowan of Renton, Wash. and William "Bill" J. Cowan of Cullowhee and Mills River.

Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Gertrude McDaniel

Gertrude Wilkie McDaniel, 89, of Gastonia, died Monday, Nov. 10, 2003, at Grandstand Regional Medical Center in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today (Thursday) at McLean Founders Chapel. The Rev. Tim Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Gaston Memorial Park. Visitation was from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, at McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia.

A native of Robbinsville, she was a daughter of the late J.D. Wilkie and Theadocia Hooper Wilkie. She was a member of First Wesleyan Church in Gastonia, where she taught Sunday school and was active in many other organizations and committees. She retired from Firestone Textiles with 42 years of service.

Surviving are two daughters, Carole Shirley of Myrtle Beach and June Chitwood of Gastonia; two brothers, Jack Wilkie of Piedmont, S.C., and James Earl Wilkie of Danielsville, Ga.; two sisters, Lucy Weaver of Gastonia and Jean Allen of Whittier; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
