Hilda Hoyle

Hilda Louise Hoyle, 71, of Sylva, died Wednesday, Nov. 1, at Brian Center in Waynesville.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3, at Lovedale Baptist Church. The Rev. Cecil Frady officiated. Burial was in Old Savannah Baptist Church. Pallbearers were Carroll Hall, David Frizzell, Lonnie Jamison, Steve Allen, Jerry Melton and Guy Dillard.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a member of Lovedale Baptist Church and was retired, after 51 years, as a beautician. She was the daughter of the late Walter and Jensey Hall Hoyle.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Wesley Hoyle; and one sister, Lois Jacobs.

Surviving are one son, Billy Hoyle of Arden; one brother, Walter Kent Hoyle of Lilburn, Ga.; and one grandson.

Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Helen Ensley

Helen Cook Ensley, 62, of Bryson City's Franklin Grove community, died Wednesday, Nov. 1.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, at Franklin Grove Baptist Church, of which she was a member. The Revs. Eddie Deitz and Tom Harris officiated. Burial was in Swain Memorial Park.

A native and lifelong resident of Swain County, she was a daughter of the late Lee and Annie Buchanan Sherrill. She had worked as a caregiver for several elderly people in Swain County for many years.

Surviving are one son, Eddie Cook of Sylva; one daughter, Wanda Cook of Bryson City; one brother, Robert Sherrill of West Virginia; one sister, Mary Sitton of Bryson City; and four grandchildren.



Eugenia Jacobs

Eugenia E. Jacobs, 74, of Abbey Circle and Ambler Road, Sylva, died Monday, Nov. 6. Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8, at Parris Cemetery. The Rev. Timothy Lolley officiated.

A native and former resident of Dillsboro, she was a resident of Asheville and a member of Jarrett Memorial Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late Frank and Mattie Snyder Jacobs.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Harry T. Jacobs, Frank T. Jacobs and Bobby Joe Jacobs; and one sister, Marie Crawford.

Surviving are three sisters, Dorcas Bird of Fort Arthur, Texas, and Rachel Cook and Mary Lou Henson, both of Asheville.

Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Linda Hatcher

Linda J. Ashe Hatcher, 47, of Petal, Miss., and Sylva, died Saturday, Nov. 4, after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. The Revs. Doug Brown and Dennis Burrell officiated. Burial was in Stillwell Cemetery. Pallbearers were Mike Hatcher, Jerry DeWeese, DeLane Nicholson, James Carpenter, Ray Carpenter and Albert Shook.

A native of Sylva, she was a homemaker and a member of the Moose Lodge. She was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her father, Gordon G. Ashe of Sylva.

Surviving are her husband, Gregory Hatcher; two sons, Gregory L. Hatcher of Orangeburg, S.C., and Chad Jones of Camp Pendleton, Calif.; two daughters, Rebecca Hatcher of Portsmouth, Va., and Shelly Hatcher of the home; her mother, Frankie Jean Ashe of Sylva; two brothers, Wayne Ashe of Waynesville and Randy Ashe of Sylva; two sisters, Lisha Shular of Sylva and Eva Jo "Jody" Hatcher of Big Spring, Texas; and three grandchildren.



Philip Taylor

Philip Kevin Taylor, 32, of Sylva, died Saturday, Nov. 4, in Jacksonville, Fla., from AIDS-related meningitis.

His ashes will be spread over the Great Smoky Mountains.

He was a resident of Jacksonville, Fla., for the last 12 years.

Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Doege and Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Taylor; one sister, Pamela Maldonado; four brothers, Joseph Taylor II, Charles Taylor, Brodie Taylor and Zachary Taylor.

Harry Middleton

Harry Edwin Middleton, 72, of 31 Middleton Drive, Waynesville, died Friday, Nov. 3, at Memorial Mission Hospital.

A memorial service will be held at 6:30 p.m. tonight (Thursday) at Allens Creek Baptist Church with a reception celebrating his life following the service at the fellowship hall. The Rev. Lloyd Fish will officiate.

A native of Jackson County, he was the son of the late Edward and Laura Bryson Middleton. He was a retired lab technician with Wellco and was employed by Haywood County Recycling Center. He was a member and deacon of Allens Creek Baptist Church and was president of the Golden Harvesters Senior Group and a member of the Sanctuaries Choir.

Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Grace Allen Middleton; two daughters, Jeanne Cagle of Waynesville and Joyce Ann Fish of Lexington; one son, Harry Edwin Middleton Jr. of Dallas, Texas; one sister, Birdell Daniels of Waynesville; and six grandchildren.

Rev. Vaughn Shook

The Rev. Vaughn Shook, 85, of 220 Mountain Springs Road, West Union, S.C., died Wednesday, Nov. 1, at the Oconee Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, in the chapel of Davenport Funeral Home. Burial was in Fairview Church of God Cemetery.

A native of Jackson County, he was the son of the late John Lee and Mary Elizabeth Galloway Shook. He was a retired employee of Beacon Manufacturing Co. and a member of the Westminister First Baptist Holiness Church.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Willa Jo Shook; and two sisters, Minnie Owens and Cleo Melton.

Surviving are his wife, Faye Holden Shook; three sons, Dee Von Shook of Seneca, S.C., Charles Robert Shook of Anderson, S.C., and Kenneth Larry Shook of Greensboro, Ga.; three daughters, Etta Mae Swafford, Sharon Smith and Doris Diane Shook, all of West Union, S.C.; two brothers, J.C. Shook of Columbus and Edward Shook of Brevard; three sisters, Della Hunter of Brevard, Delthea Ash of Tuckasegee and Ollie Owens of Brevard; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.



Anne Fisher

Anne Mae Phillips Fisher, 67, died Tuesday, Nov. 7.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. Burial will be in Hoyle Cemetery.

She was the wife of Billy J. Fisher.

Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Judy Bird

Judy Bird of Asheville Highway, Sylva, died Tuesday, Nov. 7, in Harris Regional Hospital.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home will announce arrangements.
